Rebels Get Great Effort from Anders, Special Teams in Road Win over Hurricanes

Red Deer Rebels News Release

LETHBRIDGE - Goaltending and special teams, two keys to victory that the Red Deer Rebels took full advantage of Friday night.

The Rebels got a brilliant 40-save performance from Ethan Anders, a hat-trick outing from Josh Tarzwell and were perfect in specialty team play in a 5-2 WHL win over the Lethbridge Hurricanes before 3,677 fans at the Enmax Centre.

"Our goalie played really well and our power play and penalty kill were good tonight," said Rebels GM/head coach Brent Sutter, whose team was outshot 42-15 but recieved an outstanding effort from Anders.

"He played really well. We need him to be a good goalie and he was very good tonight," said Sutter.

The 'Canes struck first - and garnered their only lead of the night - when Dylan Cozens, just nicely back from Buffalo's camp as the Sabres' first-round pick in June's NHL entry draft, beat Anders under the bar from the low slot 6:53 into the contest.

Brett Davis responded for the Rebels just under two minutes later, his wrist shot from just inside the blueline eluding a screened 'Canes netminder Carl Tetachuk. The goal was initially waved off, with the referee in question claiming Zak Smith interfered with Tetachuk, but the call was overturned.

Rebels captain Dawson Barteaux scored a go-ahead power-play marker

at 8:14 of the middle frame, his wrist shot from the point finding its way through a crowd.

Tarzwell followed with a man-advantage marker at 16:42 of the second period, cashing in on a three-on-two rush.

Pittsburgh Penguins prospect, defenceman Calen Addison, pulled the 'Canes to within a single goal with 2:43 remaining in the contest, but the Rebels scored twice with Tetachuk on the 'Canes bench, with Tarzwell pulling the trigger on both occasions.

The Rebels' 19-year-old forward found an empty net from the Red Deer blueline with 2:10 remaining in the game and then outraced a Lethbridge defender to tip a long shot and rebound off the end boards by Smith into a gaping cage.

The Rebels were two-for-two on the power play and three-for-three on the penalty kill, but Sutter wasn't exactly enamoured with his team's five-on-five play.

"We had a lot of turnovers, it was another learning experience for our young guys tonight," he said. "They have to play with a lot more assertiveness. They have to go for it."

But in the end . . .

"You get two points. It's always to nice and win and gain some confidence from that," said the Rebels boss. "There are going to be areas we need to improve on being as young as we are, but certainly Andy was a difference maker for us.

"It was big for us to go on the road and find a way to win. I thought we did some good things tonight. We just need to work hard and get better."

The Rebels host the Calgary Hitmen Saturday. The puck drops at 7 p.m.
