Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
Brandon, MB. - The Brandon Wheat Kings will be hoping to salvage the back half of their home and home Western Hockey League weekend series Saturday night when they travel to Moose Jaw to meet the Warriors.
For the second straight weekend, the Wheat Kings dropped the opening game of a 2-game series on home ice, falling 5-0 to Moose Jaw before close to 3,500 fans at Westoba Place.
With the loss, the Wheat Kings slipped to 1-2-0 on the season.
Despite a fairly strong start to the game, the Wheat Kings gave up two first period goals, fell behind 3-0 through forty minutes and saw the Warriors close out the game with two more in the third.
The Warriors got goals from five different players, including the Taphorn brothers - Kaeden and Keenan - while netminder Baily Brkin turned aside 22 shots for the shutout.
Eric Alarie, Tate Popple and Jadon Joseph rounded out the scoring for the Warriors, who improved to 2-1-0 on the season.
In making his third straight start to open the regular season, Jiri Patera made 24 stops in the Brandon net.
The Wheat Kings played Friday's game without veterans Ridly Greig and Ben McCartney. While McCartney is expected to return to the lineup on Saturday after serving a one game suspension, Greig will complete his 3-game penalty on Saturday night.
Greig was suspended for his hit on Winnipeg defenceman Chase Hartje during the opening minute of last Friday's Home Opener against the Ice.
Following Saturday night's game, the Wheat Kings will return home and spend the week preparing for what will be a busy weekend - three games in three nights.
After hosting Vancouver and Edmonton on Friday and Saturday nights respectively, the Wheat Kings will travel to Saskatoon to meet the pre-season favorites to win the WHL's Eastern Division on Sunday night.
Tickets to next weekend's games are on sale at the Keystone Centre box office, by calling (204) 726-3555 or online at keystonecentre.com.
