Spokane Chiefs News Release

Spokane, Wash. - The Spokane Chiefs announced on Saturday that Russian defenseman Matvei Startsev has been released and cleared WHL waivers.

"This was a move we had to make to get under the league limit of two import players," said Chiefs general manager Scott Carter. "With (Filip) Kral returning from Toronto's camp and Lukas Parik as one of our two goalies, Matvei was the odd man out. We expect him to pursue other opportunities in North America and wish him the best with his next team."

Startsev was selected with the 103rd overall pick in the 2019 CHL Import Draft out of Moscow, Russia. The defenseman appeared in three preseason games and one regular season game with the Chiefs.

After the move, the Chiefs are now carrying nine defensemen on their roster including Ty Smith, who is currently with the NHL's New Jersey Devils.
