Rapid City Rush News Release
(Tulsa, OK) - On Tuesday night, the Rapid City Rush visited the BOK Center for the first of five meetings against the Tulsa Oilers. Rapid City's special teams were dominant yet again and Les Reaney was the hero, forcing extra time with a shorthanded goal and potting the game-winner in overtime. The Rush now conclude the four-game road trip with a tilt against the Wichita Thunder tomorrow before returning home this Friday and Saturday. This weekend, the rival Fort Wayne Komets visit the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center and tickets are still available.
Continuing its red-hot start, the Rush powerplay unit opened the scoring at the 3:26 mark. After a shot from Jesse Schultz was denied by goaltender Ian Keserich, veteran Shawn Limpright collected the rebound in the slot and his turnaround shot found the twine for the only goal of the period.
The second period was controlled by the Oilers, outshooting the Rush 10-4 and potting a pair of goals to take the lead. The equalizer came just 26 seconds into the stanza when a cycle by the Oilers led to a chance in the low slot for Dylan Clarke who snapped a one-timer to the top-left corner. With eight minutes left in the frame, Mike Ullrich, who assisted on the earlier Tulsa goal, sent a backhand shot through a screen and past Rush goaltender Tim Boron for the 2-1 lead.
The Rush powerplay went back to work early in the third period, tying the game when Konrad Reeder's centering pass was slammed home by Jesse Schultz who was positioned at the top of the crease. At the 7:56 mark, the Oilers had an offensive-zone faceoff and center David Solway, after battling at the dot, slid a shot under Boron to give Tulsa a 3-2 lead. Finally, with less than nine minutes left in regulation and facing a 4-on-3 Oiler powerplay, Les Reaney's blocked shot gave him a breakaway that he buried past the blocker of Keserich. The tally was the first shorthanded goal of the season for the Rush and evened the score at three, forcing overtime.
In the extra period, a solid neutral zone play by Jeff Kyrzakos sprung Reaney on another breakaway and the Ceylon, Saskatchewan native snapped home the game-winner just inside the far post for the 4-3 triumph.
Rapid City dominated the special team battle, potting two powerplay goals on just three chances while stifling all eight powerplay opportunities by the Oilers.
Tim Boron now moves to 3-0 after making 34 saves on the night while Ian Keserich moved to 4-3-1 with the loss.
