Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp News Release
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Miami Marlins announced a pair of transactions that impact their Double-A affiliate Jacksonville Suns roster prior to tonight's game against the Montgomery Biscuits at Riverwalk Stadium at 8:05 p.m.
Catcher J.T. Realmuto has been optioned from Miami to Jacksonville. Realmuto was called up to the Marlins on Friday, and did not appear in any games of the three-game weekend sweep by the Marlins over the Houston Astros at Minute Maid Park.
Earlier this season in the major leagues he hit .200 (4-for-20) with five runs batted in during the seven games he played in while he was with Miami from June 1-19.
With the Suns this season, Realmuto hit .301 with six home runs and 46 RBI in 71 games played. Realmuto entered today with the Southern League's eighth best batting average (.301), and that mark was also best on the club. He was named a Southern League Midseason All-Star for the second straight season.
Realmuto spent the entire 2013 season in Jacksonville, where he earned Southern League Midseason All-Star honors. Overall in 2013 he hit .239 with five homers and 39 RBI as he played in 106 games.
Realmuto was selected by the Marlins in the third round of the 2010 draft out of Carl Albert High School in Midwest City, Oklahoma. Coming into this season Realmuto was listed by Baseball America as the Marlins No. 10 prospect, as well as the "best defensive catcher" in the Miami organization.
Additionally, Suns pitcher Chipper Smith has been placed on a rehab assignment with the GCL Marlins as he recovers from a left hamstring strain. Smith was placed on the disabled list on July 11. Smith this season with the Suns was 3-3 with a 4.02 ERA in 11 starts with Jacksonville.
The Suns roster now stands at 25 active players, and a revised roster is attached.
The Suns and Biscuits will be back at it on Monday, with first pitch set for 7:05 p.m. CT (8:05 p.m. ET). The Suns will start right-hander Robert Morey (2-1, 4.85) while the Biscuits will send out a righty of their own in Albert Suarez (1-2, 4.42).
Suns fans can listen to Monday's game on the Suns Baseball Network, 94.1 WSOS-FM or through www.jaxsuns.com, MiLB.com or the Suns iPhone or Android app, beginning at 7:50 p.m. ET with the Memorial Hospital Suns Pregame Show.
The 2014 season of Suns baseball is presented by EverBank, the official banking partner of the Jacksonville Suns. Sponsorships, group outings, and season / individual game tickets are currently available by calling the Suns front office at (904) 358-2846.
