Smokies Build Early Lead, Hold on for 11-8 Win

Birmingham, AL - The Tennessee Smokies jumped out to a commanding 9-2 lead and held on for an 11-8 win over the Birmingham Barons in front of5,702 fans at Regions Field.

The Smokies broke on top first with a pair of runs in the top of the second inning on a bases-loaded single by Dustin Geiger against Barons starter Angel Sanchez (1-11, 6.96).

The Barons struck right back in the bottom half of the inning, tying the game at 2-2 on RBI singles by Chris Curley and Jeremy Farrell.

However,five runs over the next two innings propelled the Smokies to a 7-2 lead. Lars Anderson put the Smokies back on top with a sacrifice fly in the third innings. The game broke open with a four-run fourth highlighted by RBI doubles from Dustin Geiger and Addison Russell. Sanchez finished the night with seven runs allowed on 10 hits over 5.0 IP.

The Barons fought back to within four runs by scoring three runs in the sixth highlighted by a two-run triple by Josh Richmond cutting the lead 5-9.

After the Smokies tacked on another run in the top of the seventh the Barons scored two more in the bottom of the eighth on an RBI double by Trayce Thompson and an RBI single by Kevan Smith, cutting the Smokies lead to 10-7.

Chris Curley added a solo home run in the bottom of the ninth, cutting the Smokies lead to 11-8 but Frank Batista (S, 8) closes the door as the Barons fell to19-18 in the second half and 48-59 on the year while the Smokies improved to 20-18 in the second half and 53-54. The loss dropped the Barons a half gamebehind Smokies in the North Division standings.

The Barons will look to rebound on Tuesday as RHP Chris Beck (NR) makes his 2014 debut against RHP Pierce Johnson (3-4, 2.98). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM CDT.
