Real Salt Lake Look to Get Even with Deportivo Saprissa
April 4, 2011 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
Real Salt Lake News Release
SANDY, Utah (Monday, April 4, 2011) - Having settled in San Jose, Costa Rica, after arriving on Sunday evening, Real Salt Lake is now just one day away from settling the score with Deportivo Saprissa in their CONCACAF Champions League Semifinal Round series. The long-awaited second and decisive leg of the Semifinal showdown takes place tomorrow, Tuesday, April 5, at Estadio Ricardo Saprissa in San Jose, with kickoff set for 8:00 p.m. MT. Real Salt Lake will look to continue carrying the mantle for Major League Soccer, as a series win will secure the Utah side the league's first-ever finalist slot in the Champions League format - and MLS' first finalist position in a regional club championship since 2000, when the L.A. Galaxy captured the CONCACAF Champions Cup crown.
RSL carries a 2-0 advantage over the Costa Rican powers in the aggregate goals series following a first leg shutout in Sandy back on March 15. The following are Real Salt Lake's advancement/elimination scenarios surrounding tomorrow's potential results at Estadio Ricardo Saprissa:
- RSL victory: Real Salt Lake advances to Final (aggregate series win determined by RSL's margin of victory)
- Draw: Real Salt Lake advances to Final (RSL wins series by two-goal aggregate margin)
- Saprissa wins by one goal: Real Salt Lake advances to Final (RSL wins series by one-goal aggregate margin)
- Saprissa wins 2-0: The series would be tied at 2-2 on aggregate, thereby forcing a 30-minute "mini-game" played in its entirety to determine a winner. Should the mini-game end tied, advancement will be determined via kicks from the penalty spot (Best-of-5).
- Saprissa wins by two goals, but RSL scores: Series tied on aggregate, but Real Salt Lake advances to Final via "away goals" tie-breaker
- Saprissa wins by at least three goals: Saprissa advances to Final (aggregate series win determined by Saprissa's margin of victory)
