Lancaster Stormers News Release
Ron Davenport hit a pair of home runs and Tony Peguero fired five nearly perfect innings as the Camden Riversharks topped the Lancaster Barnstormers, 4-1, early Wednesday at Campbell's Field.
Josh Hall (6-3) snuck through the first inning despite allowing three singles, thanks to picking Gabe Suarez off first base after his liner into left field. He was not quite as fortunate in the third.
Suarez punched a one-out single into short right field and was forced at second by L.J. Biernbaum. Davenport then drilled his 12th homer of the season, a liner off the second deck of signs in right field, for a 2-0 lead Sheldon Fulse continued the surge with a single to left field, took second as Hall walked Tyler Von Schell and scored on a single to left center by former Barnstormer Kyle Nichols as Camden grabbed a 3-0 edge.
Davenport's second homer of the game, an arcing fly ball to left with one out in the fifth, provided Camden with its final run. Fulse followed with a double to left but was caught stealing third. The Riversharks never got another man aboard in the game.
It was plenty for a sharp pitching staff.
Peguero (7-1) faced the minimum of 15 batters in his five-inning stint. Lloyd Turner ended any thoughts of a no-hitter when he beat out a bunt single to open the fourth, but Peguero got Mike Woods to ground into a double play. Only one batter, Danny Gonzalez on a fly ball to left, got the ball beyond the infielder's during Peguero's tenure.
Lancaster failed to make anything out of consecutive one-out walks issued to Jutt Hileman and Ivanon Coffie by Buddy Hernandez in the sixth. The Barnstormers finally put themselves on the board in the seventh when Matt LeCroy slugged his sixth homer of the year, a drive to left field, to extend his hitting streak to 15 games, three shy of the club record.
For a fleeting moment, Lancaster had the tying runs on base in the ninth. Very fleeting.
Woods singled to left with one out and was credited with a steal of second despite not being held at the bag. Gonzalez drew a four-pitch walk, bringing the torrid LeCroy to the plate as the tying run. The Lancaster DH, with the outfielders playing deep, dropped a single into short left center. Woods was held up at third, but Gonzalez rounded the bag at second too far and was cut down as Biernbaum fired behind him. Alec Zumwalt coaxed Manny Mejia to ground into a force play to record his 18th save and second of the series.
NOTES: Lancaster lost the rubber game for the third straight series...The Barnstormers dropped a game behind York and Newark which won their respective day games...Davenport became the fourth opponent, and the first since Vito Chiaavalloti on June 30, to homer twice in a game this season...No Barnstormer had done it since Jutt Hileman on May 30 at Newark...LeCroy is 29-for-64 (.453) during his streak...His overall average stands at .323...Eric Ackerman (3-6) will make the start against Newark on Thursday evening against Mike Bumstead (10-5)...Game time is 7:05 at Clipper Magazine Stadium.
