Long Island Ducks News Release
(Central Islip, N.Y., July 22, 2008) - Long Island Ducks team officials today announced that outfielder Jay Gibbons has had his contract purchased by the Milwaukee Brewers. The 31-year-old joined the Ducks in June and played in 27 games for Long Island, batting .280 with five home runs and 19 RBI.
"We're excited for Jay," says Ducks principal owner Frank Boulton. "We are glad he's received this opportunity in the Atlantic League. We wish him the best of luck and continued success."
Gibbons spent seven seasons with the Baltimore Orioles before being released by the club this spring. He made his big league debut with Baltimore in 2001, hitting 15 home runs while appearing in 73 games. His best season came in 2003, when he batted .277 with 23 homers and 100 RBI. Gibbons played in a career-high 160 games that year, and also clubbed 39 doubles. The Michigan native was originally selected by Toronto in the 14th round of the 1998 draft.
The Long Island Ducks play their home games at Citibank Park and are in their ninth season of play in the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball. For further information, visit www.liducks.com, or call (631) 940-3825.
