Long Island Ducks News Release
(Central Islip, N.Y., July 23, 2008) - Long Island Ducks team officials today announced the signing of Atlantic League veteran Charlie Weatherby. The 29-year-old Weatherby returns to the league after a stint in the Philadelphia system last season. The righthander spent the 2006 campaign as the closer for eventual league champion Lancaster, saving 15 games and compiling a 3.13 ERA in 63 appearances.
"This move helps to shore up our pitching staff," says Ducks general manager Michael Pfaff. "Charlie has had success in the Atlantic League and we believe he will be an important asset to our club."
Weatherby was originally drafted by the Boston Red Sox in 2001, and spent four seasons in Boston's minor league system. In 2006, he was signed by the Lancaster Barnstormers, where he became a late inning specialist and eventually the closer of the ballclub. Weatherby struck out 67 batters and allowed just 71 hits in 74.2 innings pitched. He earned a save in the clinching game of the South Division playoffs against Atlantic City, and was the hero in game two of the championship series against Bridgeport, earning the win in a 12-inning contest with four and two-thirds innings of shutout relief.
The Long Island Ducks play their home games at Citibank Park and are in their ninth season of play in the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball. For further information, visit www.liducks.com, or call 631-904-3825.
