Rayz fall to Bucks 2-1 in overtime

December 6, 2006 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Corpus Christi IceRays News Release

The Corpus Christi Rayz and Laredo Bucks played their second straight game on Wednesday afternoon, and the contest was eerily similar to Sunday's beginning of the home and home set. Laredo came from behind for the second straight time and beat Corpus Christi 2-1 in overtime. The Rayz played a more complete game on Wednesday and earned a point with the extra session defeat, but fell just short for the second time in a row, after clinging to a 1-0 lead for much of the game. With the point the Rayz improved to 20 points on the season, and into a third place tie in the Southeast Division. Corpus Christi now has points in eight of their last 11 games and will continue their road trip this weekend in Rio Grande Valley and Austin.

For the second straight game, Corpus Christi scored the only goal of the game against Laredo. Kevin Watters redirected a shot from the right edge of the crease that squeezed its way past Laredo goaltender Eric Marvin at 6:36 to give the Rayz a 1-0 lead. Corpus Christi was outshot 17-8 in the opening frame, but took a one-goal lead into the second period.

The teams remained scoreless in the second period, however unlike Sunday the second period featured wide open transition and chances at both ends. Laredo had the best chance of the period but Rayz goaltender Ron Vogel robbed Jeff Bes from the bottom of the slot with a brilliant kick save off the right pad. Laredo outshot Corpus Christi 9-6 in the second period.

In the third period the Bucks scored a power play goal to tie the game at 11:04. Adam Rivet tallied from the right circle to put Laredo on the board and tie the game at 1-1. The Bucks outshot the Rayz 11-7 in the third, and for the fifth time in eight games a Rayz contest went to overtime.

In the extra session, Bucks forward Jeff Bes ended the game when he scooped up a loose puck and beat Vogel from the edge of right circle for the overtime game winning goal at 2:17. The Rayz overtime loss moved their record to 8-9-4 on the year. The Bucks improved their record to 11-6-2. Vogel played terrifically, but took the OT loss making 36 saves on 38 shots. His record moved to 6-6-3. Marvin made 20 saves on 21 shots to win his sixth game of the year improving to 6-3-2. The Rayz were outshot 38-21. Corpus Christi went 1-4 on the power play. Laredo went 1-6. Corpus Christi now has power play goals scored in 10 of their last 11 contests. The Rayz have points in eight of their last 11, but are also riding a season-high, five-game winless skid.

The Rayz continue their current three-game road trip when they travel to play Rio Grande Valley on Friday night at 7:35pm and Austin on Saturday at 7:30pm. Corpus Christi will return home versus the Austin Ice Bats on Thursday, December 14th at 7:05pm on Texas Lottery Night, on College Night, presented by U.S. Army and Hot Z-95.5FM.
