BACK TO THE JACK SHACK
The Lubbock Cotton Kings make their second venture of the season to the Ector County Coliseum to face the Odessa Jackalopes tonight. The two teams surprisingly have not seen each other since October 28th. The Kings head into the game with a Southern Conference leading winning percentage of 61.8% and seek to extend a road winning streak to two games. Odessa, who sets in fourth place in the Southwest Division with a 7-8-2 record, has a 5-4-0 home record this season, but they have won five straight at home against Lubbock. The last Lubbock victory in Odessa came on November 11, 2005. The game kicks off a three-game week for the Kings, who will return home to host Youngstown on Friday before returning to Odessa on Saturday.
THE SERIES
Lubbock continues on the road by making their second trip of the season to Odessa to face the Jackalopes. Odessa leads the season series with a 1-0-1 record (Lubbock is 1-1-0 against the Jacks this season) and leads the all-time series with a record of 47-20-5. Lubbock is 25-42-5 all-time against Odessa and former King Jan Melichercik is the Kings all-time leader against the Jacks with 43 points (16g, 27a). Lubbock's Bobby Brown (2g,3a) and Kyle Nosan (1g,4a) each lead the Kings in this season's series with five points, while Mike Rutter leads the Jackalopes this season against Lubbock with five points (1g,4a). This is the 73rd all-time meeting between the two clubs.
THE LAST TIME
10/28/06 - The Lubbock Cotton Kings registered four power play goals but were unable to stop two late third period Odessa goals that came 1:31 apart to give the Odessa Jackalopes a 6-5 win at the Ector County Coliseum.
Odessa's Adam Loncan collected the first goal of the evening 5:58 into the first period. Solid passes from Trevor Weisgerber and Kyle Nosan led to a Bobby Brown power play goal at the 9:28 mark of the opening frame.
In the middle period, Weisgerber earned his first goal of the season with a shot from between the circles just 43 seconds into the frame. The Jackalopes answered back when Mike Rutter tied up the game at the 5:24 mark. Twenty-one seconds into the sixth man-advantage opportunity for Lubbock, Jimmy Callahan scored his first goal of the season 9:33 into the second period. Odessa would take back the lead with a pair of Steve Shrum power play goals that came 1:01 apart (beginning with 2:26 remaining in the period) to end the second period scoring.
Nosan lit the lamp for the first time this season at the 2:21 mark of the third period to tie the game at 4-4. Weisgerber earned his second goal of the evening at 16:28, giving the Kings a 5-4 lead, but it would not last long. Seventeen seconds later, Odessa's Donnie Margettie slipped the puck past Lubbock netminder J.F. Perras, who was making his pro debut. Odessa scored again just 1:16 later with a tally from Blaine Bablitz to clinch the victory.
J.F. Perras suffered the loss in net for Lubbock as he stopped 31 of 37 shots. Goaltender Mike Gorman recorded 33 saves in the win for the Jackalopes.
Brown and Nosan led the Cotton Kings with four points each (1g,3a), while Weisgerber had three points (2g,1a) in the loss.
ROSTER CHANGES
Neither the Cotton Kings nor Jackalopes have made any changes from their last game as of press time. Odessa does receive defenseman Jeff Ewasko back from suspension.
