Published on August 9, 2007 under Central Hockey League (CHL)
Corpus Christi IceRays News Release
The Corpus Christi Rayz tenth anniversary hockey season will begin in Rio Grande Valley on Friday, October 19th and conclude in Mississippi on Saturday, March 22, 2008, the Rayz and the Central Hockey League announced Thursday afternoon. The announcement came as part of the 2007-2008 CHL regular season schedule. The 64-game schedule has the Rayz playing 32 games in Corpus Christi and 32 games on the road. During the season, the Rayz will play 14 out of 16 CHL opponents and travel throughout six states and 12 cities during the five-month long season. The Rayz begin their home schedule on Saturday, October 20, 2007 at 7:05pm at the American Bank Center vs. the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees, completing an opening weekend home and home series. The Rayz home portion of the regular season comes to a close on Saturday, March 15, 2008 when they host the Texas Brahmas, who return to the CHL after a one-year suspension of operations. Season tickets are currently on sale and individual tickets will go on sale in early October at the American Bank Center Box Office and all Ticketmaster outlets. For more information, please call the Rayz at (361) 814-PUCK.
The Rayz will begin the 2007-2008 season with their five of their first six games coming against Southeast Division foes. Following the opening weekend contests against Rio Grande Valley, the Rayz will then travel to face Laredo Bucks on Friday, October 26th in Laredo's home opener. The Rayz then host the Youngstown Steelhounds on the following Friday night, before hosting the Bucks on Sunday, October 28th at 3:05pm. That weekend will feature the first Rayz - Bucks meetings since their first ever playoff encounter in 2007 Southern Conference Semi-Finals. The opening segment of the season showcases a preview of what's to come for most of the season for Corpus Christi. The Rayz will play 49 of their 64 games against their seven Southern Conference opponents. 34 of those games will come against the Southeast Division trio. The Rayz have 10 games (5 home, 5 away) versus the Austin Ice Bats, and a season-high, 12 games (6 home, 6 away) each against the Killer Bees and Bucks.
Rayz fans at the American Bank Center this season will catch a glimpse of the majority of the CHL clubs, as all but three teams will visit Corpus Christi at least once during the season. The exceptions are the Tulsa Oilers and for the second straight season the Oklahoma City Blazers and Wichita Thunder. The Oilers and Thunder are the only teams this season that the Rayz do not play. Additionally, the Rayz do not travel to face the Rocky Mountain Rage, Youngstown Steelhounds or the reigning President's Cup Champion, Colorado Eagles. The Rayz do, however, host all three teams, with the defending champs' lone trip to Corpus Christi coming in the Rayz first game of 2008, on Friday, January 4th at 7:05pm.
Key dates in the upcoming season for the Rayz include the fourth consecutive New Year's Eve home game. The Rayz will host the Austin Ice Bats at the special start time of 8:05pm. Corpus Christi's first of four games against the Arizona Sundogs will come in the Rayz Fourth Annual "Cool School Day Game" on Wednesday, December 5th at 11:05am. The game will be the first rematch between the Rayz and Sundogs since their dramatic, seven-game Southern Conference Quarterfinals series in the 2007 post-season.
From early November to mid December, the Rayz will see their longest road trip and home stand of the season, both consisting of five games. On November 9th, the Rayz will embark on a thirteen day, five-city trip that begins in Laredo, and then travels to Odessa, Rio Grande Valley and Bossier-Shreveport before ending at the Texas Brahmas on November 21st. Five games later on Sunday, December 2nd the Rayz begin their season-long home stand against the Austin Ice Bats. The Rayz then play Arizona and Laredo twice each through Friday, December 14th continuing their stint at the American Bank Center.
Five of the Rayz opening eight games will be played at the American Bank Center, while five of the season's final six games will be played away from Corpus Christi. The Rayz will cap off the 2007-2008 season on a four-game road trip beginning Sunday, March 16th in Austin, continuing to Rio Grande Valley and then finishing with back to back games in Mississippi against the RiverKings.
The Rayz play at least one game on each day of the week this season including their Monday evening New Year's Eve home game. The majority of the games were scheduled for the weekends to accommodate fans. Of the Rayz 32 home games, 27 of them come on weekends or non-work nights. The Rayz will play 11 Saturday night home games, nine on Friday nights and six on Sunday afternoon and one on New Year's Eve (Monday). The additional games consist of the "Cool School Day Game," two Wednesday night games, and one Tuesday and Thursday night game each.
For the fourth straight year, the Rayz will play all home games at the American Bank Center in downtown Corpus Christi. Most Rayz home games Monday - Saturday will have a start time of 7:05pm this year, while Sunday afternoon start times will begin at 3:05pm. The exceptions to this will be the "Cool School Game" at 11:05am and New Year's Eve game which begins at 8:05pm. There are also four additional Saturday night games that begin at 8:05pm. Those games take place on January 26th vs. Rio Grande Valley, February 2nd vs. Mississippi, February 16th vs. Odessa, and March 8th vs. Odessa.
The Corpus Christi Rayz will begin their 10th Anniversary season on October 19th and return to the American Bank Center for their home opener on Saturday, October 20th at 7:05pm vs. Rio Grande Valley. The Rayz are proud to be celebrating a decade along the Gulf Coast and invite all of South Texas to join in the fun of the 2007-2008 campaign. Season tickets and corporate packages are currently available through the Rayz office. For more information, please call the Rayz at (361) 814-PUCK.
