Rays Use Power Play to Complete Sweep of Solar Bears

ORLANDO, Fla. - Three power play goals, including the first two of Jonathan Charbonneau's pro career, gave the South Carolina Stingrays (43-15-6-1) a 4-1 victory over the Orlando Solar Bears (31-28-6-3) on Sunday afternoon at the Amway Center.

Defenseman J.C. Brassard also scored his first professional goal and added two assists in the win, while Paul Geiger notched his 10th tally of the season in the first period and goaltender Parker Milner stopped 19 shots to pick up his 25th victory of the year.

South Carolina completed a 3-game sweep of the Solar Bears in Orlando this week and finished their road trip with a perfect 4-0-0 mark after defeating Atlanta on Monday.

Geiger made it 1-0 at 12:58 of the first by scoring on a one-timer feed from Steven Whitney from the front of the Orlando net. Whitney put the puck right on Geiger's stick as the defenseman snuck down in deep into the Solar Bear end for a re-direct that beat goaltender Mackenzie Skapski. A second assist on the goal was credited to forward Jake Kamrass.

The Stingrays expanded their lead to 2-0 on a power play in the final minute of the opening frame when Whitney once again earned a primary helper, this time sending the puck to Brassard for a shot from the inside of the right circle. Brassard's drive beat Skapski to the goaltender's right at 19:22. Charbonneau had the second assist on the tally, his first professional point.

Charbonneau got on the board with a power play marker of his own at 10:44 of the middle frame and made it 3-0 Stingrays. After being knocked over in the corner, Charbonneau got back up and took a pass from Brassard before putting a shot by Skapski from the left circle. Forward Kelly Zajac also got on the scoresheet for the first time in the game with the second assist on the strike.

The Solar Bears got within two goals at 6:13 of the third period when defenseman Sean Zimmerman scored his first goal of the season to make it 3-1.

But Charbonneau tallied his second power play goal of the night at 12:18 of the final frame to put SC up 4-1 off a feed by Zajac that came right in front of the Orlando net. Brassard also recorded an assist on the play for his third point of the afternoon.

South Carolina finished 3-for-7 on the man-advantage in the game, breaking out after being held off the scoreboard on the power play earlier in the series.

Orlando was held silent on the power play in the contest with South Carolina holding the Solar Bears scoreless at 0-for-5. Skapski took the loss for Orlando, making 25 saves in the game.

The Rays return home to host the Kalamazoo Wings in the teams' only matchup of the season on Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m. at the North Charleston Coliseum.
