NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. - The South Carolina Stingrays, proud ECHL affiliate of the NHL's Washington Capitals, have announced the signing of forward Trevor Olson to a standard professional contract Sunday ahead of their final game of the week in Orlando. Olson recently finished his collegiate career at the University of North Dakota in the National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC), playing in 28 games during his senior season with 12 points on two goals and 10 assists.
Olson, who hails from Duluth, Minn., saw time in 121 games during his 4-year NCAA career, totaling 35 points on 11 goals and 24 assists along with 73 penalty minutes. The 24-year-old played in the United States Hockey League (USHL) before heading to North Dakota, spending time with both the Green Bay Gamblers and Sioux City Musketeers. Olson served as the captain of Sioux City during the 2013-14 season and had 21 points in 21 games on nine goals and 12 assists but had his year cut short due to injury. Overall in 91 USHL contests over three seasons, Olson posted 71 points on 26 goals and 45 assists.
Olson is expected to join the Stingrays in Orlando and make his professional debut on Sunday afternoon against the Solar Bears while wearing No. 6. Olson will become the 11th amateur player that has signed with South Carolina in the last month. Sunday's game begins at 1:30 p.m. at the Amway Center.
South Carolina returns home on Tuesday to host the Kalamazoo Wings at 7:05 p.m. at the North Charleston Coliseum.
