Wisconsin Timber Rattlers News Release
PEORIA, IL - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers let one get away in a 5-4 loss to the Peoria Chiefs at Dozer Park on Tuesday night. Wisconsin had a 4-2 lead but committed two errors and made other miscues that led to a pair of unearned runs scoring in the bottom of the third to tie the game. A two-out, RBI single by Tyler Reichenborn in the sixth inning gave the Chiefs a lead they wouldn't lose despite late chances for the Wisconsin offense.
Peoria (10-12) had two outs with none on base in the bottom of the third when two singles and a hit batsmen loaded the bases. Wisconsin starting pitcher Joseph Hernandez threw a wild pitch to let the first run score. Noah Mendlinger followed with a single to right to score a run and the Chiefs were up 2-0.
Wisconsin (9-13) loaded the bases with one out against Peoria starting pitcher Dionys Rodriguez, but a pop up for the second out left the Rattlers looking for a two-out hit with runners in scoring position. Entering Tuesday's game, Wisconsin was 9-for-78 (.115) with two outs and runners in scoring position. Two swings of the bat changed that stat to the positive.
Darrien Miller singled to center to knock in the tying runs. After a walk to Ernesto Martinez Jr reloaded the bases, Eduardo García singled to center to score two more runs and Wisconsin had a 4-2 lead.
However, the Chiefs tied the game with plenty of help from Wisconsin in the bottom of the fourth. Hernandez walked a batter with one out. Then, Martinez committed an error on a grounder to first off the bat of Jimmy Crooks that put runners at the corners. Aaron McKeithan sent a high pop foul that dropped in foul territory. McKeithian took advantage of the second chance and knocked in the runner from third with a sacrifice fly to right.
Crooks, the runner at first, advanced to second on the throw through to the plate and that cost Wisconsin after a wild pitch on ball four to Thomas Francisco allowed Crooks to take third base. Then, Francisco broke for second and drew a throw from Miller, but the throw wound up in center to let Crooks trot home from third with the tying run.
Reichenborn delivered the go-ahead run with a single to right on a 3-2 pitch with two outs in the bottom of the sixth.
Wisconsin had chances in the seventh and eighth inning. Micah Bello and Robert Moore singled to start the seventh before a strikeout and a 4-6-3 double play ended the threat. Martinez doubled to start the eighth, but he was still standing at second when the inning ended with a popup and two strikeouts.
In the ninth, Moore drew a two-out walk, but the Chiefs got the final out to beat Wisconsin in game one of the six-game series.
Game two of the series is Wednesday morning. Cameron Wagoner (1-3, 7.79) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. The Chiefs have named Cooper Hjerpe (1-2, 6.75) as their starting pitcher. Game time is 11:05am. The broadcast on AM1280, WNAM starts with the Community Blood Center Pregame Show at 10:45am.
