Rascals Take Series from Corrnbelters
July 2, 2012 - Frontier League (FL)
River City Rascals News Release
O'Fallon, Mo. - The Rascals bullpen duo of Brandon Cunniff and Dustin Umberger combined to strikeout the final seven CornBelter hitters as River City extended their one-run lead to three in the bottom seventh and Umberger registered his first save since June 12th in a 6-3 win to take two of three from Normal in the final home stand before the All-Star break.
Doug Sanders got River City on top in the first single handedly when he doubled, stole third, and scored on a throwing error for a 1-0 lead. Normal tied it at one in the second before Preston Vancil settled in, retiring eight of the next nine before River City took the lead in the bottom of the fourth.
Matt Serna hustled to second on an error by the shortstop when the ball deflected to right-center and eventually scored on an Eric Williams groundout before Sanders hit a two-run homer to right-center for a 4-1 Rascal lead.
Vancil (2-4) gave a up a two-run homerun that closed the score to 4-3 but he battled through the sixth before giving way to Cunniff who struck out five in his two innings of work while the offense plated two runs in the seventh to extend the lead back to three at 6-3.
A leadoff double from Charlie Lisk chased Normal starter Ryan Krumlauf (2-2) and after Jerem Synan walked, a groundout pushed both runners up a base. Each would score on a wild pitch before Cunniff struck out the side in the eighth and Umberger did the same in the ninth for his eighth save in nine chances.
With the win the Rascals keep pace with the top four teams in the west division, all winners on Monday night, and get set to ride their recent momentum into a six-game road trip to finish the first half against two of the top teams in the Frontier League. River City opens a three-game trip in Marion against the Southern Illinois Miners Tuesday with first pitch set for 7:05 before wrapping up the road trip against second-place Windy City over the weekend.
