JOLIET SLAMMERS (18-23) @ ROCKFORD RIVERHAWKS (15-25)

Monday, July 2 - 7:05 p.m. CT

RiverHawks Stadium - Loves Park, IL

Game #42 - Road Game #21 (18-23), (10-10)

RHP #4 Steven Maxwell (4-3, 3.76 ERA) vs. RHP #2 Drew Rucinski (3-1, 3.06 ERA)

Last time out...

Kyle Maunus hit a two-run home run to give the Slammers a 2-1 lead in the second inning and they never looked back in a 4-1 win over the Rockford RiverHawks Sunday night. Jim Schult was excellent again for Joliet on the mound as he went six and two thirds innings of one-run ball. Schult scattered five hits and struck out five batters while only walking one to pick up the victory. Chase Doremus provided the bridge to Amalio Diaz who picked up his ninth save of the season. Joliet also pushed across runs in the fourth and fifth innings thanks to a RBI double from David Fox and a sacrifice fly off the bat of Abel Nieves. With the win, the Slammers snapped their four-game losing streak and evened their series with Rockford at one game apiece. Joliet stayed eight games back of the Schaumburg Boomers for first place in the West Division.

For Starters...

Steven Maxwell is coming off a rough outing on June 27 against the Southern Illinois Miners as he only lasted four innings and gave up seven runs on nine hits in an 11-8 loss. Overall though Maxwell has been Joliet's most consistent pitcher as he's gone at least seven innings in five of his eight starts. Maxwell put up outstanding numbers at Division One powerhouse Texas Christian University and got drafted twice, once by the Minnesota Twins, and once by the Chicago Cubs. Maxwell's junior season at TCU saw him tally an 11-2 record with a 2.70 ERA. Maxwell tossed 103.1 innings that season and struck out 93 batters while only walking 34 in 18 starts. He was a 2010 2nd-team Louisville Slugger all-American, the 2010 Mountain West Conference Pitcher of the Year, a 2010 1st-team All-Mountain West Conference selection, a 2010 ABCA 2nd-team All-Midwest Region selection and he made the 2010 NCAA Fort Worth Regional All-Tournament Team. His pitching helped lead TCU to the College World Series. Maxwell was drafted by the Minnesota Twins in the 12th round of the 2010 draft but elected to return to TCU for his senior season. Injuries shortened Maxwell's senior campaign but the right-hander still went 5-1 with a 3.13 ERA in 11 starts. He was named to the All-Mountain West 2nd Team at the end of the season. Maxwell finished his collegiate career with a 21-5 record and a 3.43 ERA. He was chosen by the Chicago Cubs in the 37th round of the 2011 draft.
