Miners Lose in 12 to Gateway

Sauget, IL - The Southern Illinois Miners lost to the Gateway Grizzlies in walk off fashion as the Grizzlies defeated the Miners 4-3. The Miners complete their nine game road trip in ten days at 5-4. The Miners were swept by the Gateway Grizzlies. Miners starter Dave Harden threw 7.1 innings in a no-decision effort. He gave up nine hits and allowed three runs, while walking one and striking out four.

The Grizzlies scored first in the bottom of the first off Harden to take a 1-0 lead. The Grizzlies added another run off Harden with a run in the bottom of the third inning to take a 2-0 lead. Grizzlies starter Tim Brown through four innings had only given up two hits.

The Miners finally got on the board off Brown with a two out base hit and RBI by Jason Ganek to cut the Grizzlies lead 2-1. The Miners tied the game in the top of the sixth inning off Brown when Darian Sandford scored on an error by Brown of a ball Chad Maddox put into play.

With the game tied up at two, the Miners took the lead off Brown with a solo home run by Jason Ganek in the top of the seventh inning to give the Miners a 3-2 lead. However, the Grizzlies tied the game in the bottom of the eighth inning off Miners reliever Albert Ayala, when John Shelby walked with the bases loaded to make it a 3-3 game. The run was charged to Harden who left after a one out single by Antone DeJesus.

The game headed to extra innings with the Grizzlies hitting a walk off single off Darrin Tew in the bottom of the twelfth by third baseman Chris McClendon to give the Grizzlies the 4-3 win. With the loss, the Miners fall to 24-18 on the season. Darrin Tew is now 2-2 on the season, getting the loss in the game.

The Miners head home for a three game set as they welcome in the River City Rascals at 24-18. The Miners trail Traverse City by four games in the Eastern Division. First pitch from Rent One Park is at 7:05 pm.
