Rapidz overcome five-run deficit; score eight unanswered in win

(OTTAWA, ON) Friday, July 25, 2008 - On a night where 3,513 fans packed Rapidz Stadium to honour our troops, the Rapidz completed a five run comeback to win game one of the series 8-5.

The visiting Jackals opened the scoring in the top of the third inning, scoring two runs on three consecutive doubles by Bryant Nelson, Juan Tejeda and Chris Kelly for a 2-0 lead.

The Jackals added three more in the top of the fourth, thanks to a three-run homerun by second baseman Tommy Murphy for a 5-0 lead.

The Rapidz chipped away at the five run deficit, adding single runs in the fourth and fifth innings to reduce the lead to 5-2.

The Rapidz completed the comeback in the seventh, scoring a total of five runs in the inning to take a 7-5 lead. The Rapidz sent 10 players to the plate scoring the five runs with four hits, two walks and one hit batter.

The Rapidz added one more run in the eighth inning for the 8-5 win. Angelo Burrows (1-0), pitching in relief for Mike Kusiewicz, pitched 1.1 innings, allowing no runs, hits or walks and striking out two for the 200th of his career. Justin Barnes (3-1) is credited with the loss for the Jackals, allowing five runs (all earned) on four hits, one walk and two strikeouts in 0.2 of an inning. Cardoza Tucker picked up his third save of the season for the Rapidz in the win.

Game two of the three-game series will be Saturday, July 26 at 1:05pm with North Gower, ON native Fraser Robinson (2-5, 5.69 ERA) on the mound for the Rapidz against Tom Atlee (1-1, 3.89 ERA) for the Jackals. Tomorrow will be "CAA Travel Day" at Rapidz Stadium where fans will have a chance to win a family trip to Quebec City to watch the Rapidz take on their national rivals the Quebec Capitales.
