Tornadoes Rally Past Pride; 11-10

(Nashua, N.H., July 25, 2008) The Worcester Tornadoes rallied for seven runs in the bottom of the ninth inning and plated the winning run on a throwing error to foil the Nashua Pride, 11-10, in front of 2,922 fans at Hanover Insurance Park at Fitton Field on Friday night.

The Tornadoes sent ten batters to the plate in the ninth inning and scored seven runs, on six hits, while the Pride committed a pair of errors to aid the Worcester offense. Relievers Ryan Buckland and Andrew Weimer pitched the ninth inning for Nashua. Buckland was charged with three runs while Weimer suffered the loss giving up four.

The Tornadoes offense pounded three home runs in the game, with first baseman Chris Colabello, right fielder Scott Grimes, and second baseman Omar Pena all going deep for Worcester. Colabello finished the game 3-for-5 with a RBI and three runs, Grimes was 1-for-4 with two RBI and a run, while Pena went 3-for-5 with two RBI and two runs, including the game winner. Third baseman Jeff LaHair went 2-for-4 with a triple and what was the eventual game winning fielder's choice that induced a throwing error from Pride shortstop Sandy Almonte. Shortstop Chuck Jeroloman (2), designated hitter Francisco Caraballo, and catcher Alex Trezza all also recorded RBI for Worcester.

The Pride were led at the plate by third baseman Argenis Tavarez, he went 4-for-5 with a double, triple, and a RBI. Designated hitter Mike Torres went 3-for-4 with a home run two RBI and a run. First baseman Bryan Duplissie was 1-for-1 with two RBI and two runs and was intentionally walked twice. Shortstop Sandy Almonte belted a homer and finished 1-for-4, second baseman Ismael Castro was 1-for-5 with a RBI, center fielder Ervin Alcantara went 1-for-5 with two RBI, and right fielder Jeremy Pickrel finished the night 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles.

Nashua starting pitcher Jarrett Stawarz (3-2) did not factor in a decision, lasting six innings, giving up four runs, on seven hits, one walk and two strike outs. Relievers Rich Garces and Adam Piechowski each pitched a scoreless inning of relief for the Pride.

Worcester starter Junior Guerrero (4-4) also did not factor in a decision, going six innings, giving up six runs, on eight hits, three walks and two strike outs. Reliever John Birtwell earned the win for the Tornadoes pitching the ninth inning, giving up three runs, on hour hits, one walk and one strike out.

The Pride and Rox will play again on Saturday night, at 7:05pm, when Nashua send's right hander Jason Paul to the mound. Worcester will counter with left hander Tom Cochran.
