New Jersey Jackals News Release

Ottawa, ON - The New Jersey Jackals jumped out to an early 5-0 lead, but the Ottawa Rapidz rallied to score the game's final eight runs to defeat the Jackals 8-5 on Friday night in front of 3,512 fans at Ottawa Stadium.

With two outs in the top of the third inning, the Jackals opened up the scoring with back-to-back doubles by SS Bryant Nelson and 1B Juan Tejeda as New Jersey went up 1-0. 3B Chris Kelly then singled Tejeda home to put New Jersey on top 2-0. The Jackals then extended their lead to 5-0 in the top of the fourth inning when 2B Tommy Murphy ripped his first career home run to left field with C Matt Lauderdale and RF Marcos Rodriguez aboard.

New Jersey starter Ted Serro cruised through the first three innings before Ottawa broke through in the bottom of the fourth inning. With the bases loaded and one out, Rapidz DH Nate Hall hit a popup to shallow left center that dropped between LF Craig Maddox and Nelson, enabling C Kyle Geiger to score and cut the Rapidz deficit to 5-1. However, Serro then induced an inning-ending double play to get out of the jam.

In the bottom of the fifth, Ottawa plated an unearned run to make it a 5-2 game. SS Juan Infante led off with a single on a drag bunt to extend his hitting streak to 12 games. After a flyout by 2B Jose De Los Santos, 3B Jake Daubert hit a sharp grounder to the right side of the infield, but Murphy threw the ball wide of second base while trying to turn the double play, enabling Infante to score from first. Once again though, Serro got out of trouble by rolling a double play to end the inning.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, Serro exited and turned the game over to reliever Justin Barnes. Barnes began the inning by dealing a leadoff walk to Infante before two consecutive singles by De Los Santos and 3B Jake Daubert cut the deficit to 5-3. After Barnes stuck out 1B Jabe Bergeron for the first out of the inning, the right-hander hit Geiger to load the bases for LF Jereme Milons. Milons then doubled home two runs to tie the score at 5-5. Following an RBI single by DH Nate Hall that put runners on the corners with two outs, Milons scored from third when the Jackals attempted to throw out Hall stealing second as the Rapidz lead 7-5 after seven innings of play. Ottawa added an eighth inning insurance fun when De Los Santos reached on an error by Murphy and scored on a Geiger RBI single.

Barnes (3-1) surrendered five earned runs in 2/3 of an inning as he was tagged with the loss. Ottawa reliever Angelo Burrows (1-0) retired all four batters he faced to pick up the victory. Rapidz closer Cardoza Tucker pitched a perfect top of the ninth to notch his third save of the season. For New Jersey, Serro didn't factor in the decision despite leaving the game with a 5-2 lead after allowing just one earned run on eight hits in six innings.

The Jackals continue their three-game series against the Rapidz on Saturday afternoon at 1:05 p.m. when New Jersey right-hander Ted Serro takes the hill against Ottawa southpaw Fraser Robinson at Ottawa Stadium.
