Ottawa Voyageurs News Release
(ATLANTIC CITY, NJ) Tuesday, July 29, 2008 - The Ottawa Rapidz were looking for their fifth win in a row as they faced the Atlantic City Surf on Tuesday night. The Rapidz took an early lead and never looked back to earn a commanding 14-1 victory.
The Rapidz welcomed Austin Redwine with a big first inning, getting to him early. The rookie pitcher, during his first start in the Can-Am League, allowed three walks, hit two batters, and his defense committed an error resulting in three unearned runs in the first inning.
Ottawa continued their offensive output with two runs in the top of the second inning. Nate Hall walked with the bases loaded to bring in one run before Jared Lemieux hit into a fielder's choice to score the Rapidz second run of the inning. A two-run home run by Kyle Geiger, his sixth of the season, gave the Rapidz a 7-0 lead after four innings of play.
Pete Pirman hit a sacrifice fly with the bases loaded in the sixth to add another run to increase the Rapidz lead. Two more runs in the top of the eighth would give the Rapidz a 10-0 lead.
The Surf scored once in the bottom of the eighth to avoid being shut out. The Rapidz hit again in the ninth, adding four more runs for a final score of 14-1.
With four more hits in six official at-bats Jabe Bergeron increased his league-leading batting average to .398.
Tanner Watson (2-4) made the most out of his teams' offensive surge. In 6.1 innings, the righty allowed no runs, eight hits, one walk, and struck out three batters. Redwine (0-1) worked for 2.2 innings, allowing five runs (two earned), one hit, six walks and two strike outs.
Mike Kusiewicz (2-5, 3.78 ERA) for the Rapidz will square off against Atlantic City's Rory Shortell (4-2, 5.49 ERA) in the second game of the series on Tuesday, July 29. The Rapidz return home August 4 for a seven-game home stand against the Sussex Skyhawks and Brockton Rox, which will feature "Break the Attendance Record Night" presented by East Side Mario's.
