Kitchener Rangers News Release
Michael McNiven made 31 saves as the Owen Sound Attack shut out the Kitchener Rangers 3-0 on Friday night.
The Attack opened the scoring near the midway point of the first period, taking advantage of the dying seconds of a power play opportunity. Rangers netminder Dawson Carty made two saves, but import defenceman Damir Sharipzyanov jumped on the loose puck and slid it over the goal line for his third of the season. Daniel Milne and Thomas Schemitsch picked up assists on the lone goal of the first period.
Owen Sound led shots on goal 15-5 after the opening 20 minutes.
The teams skated through a scoreless middle frame, with the Rangers out-shooting the Attack 17-8.
A second power play marker put Owen Sound ahead 2-0 early in the third period. Captain Zach Nastasiuk picked up a rebound in front of the net and lifted a backhand shot over Carty for his team-leading 14th of the season. Santino Centorame and Chris Bigras each picked up a helper on the goal at 1:59.
Waterloo native Kyle Platzer extended the Attack's lead to three goals with 14 minutes left to play. The Edmonton Oilers prospect picked up the puck in his own zone and carried it the length of the ice, cutting across the front of the crease and tucking a shot behind Carty's right skate. The unassisted marker was Platzer's 11th goal of the year.
Owen Sound out-shot Kitchener 11-9 in the final frame and finished with a 34-31 overall advantage. Attack goalie Michael McNiven's shutout was his second of the season.
The teams will meet again Saturday night in Owen Sound.
