Kitchener Rangers News Release
The Kitchener Rangers fell 6-2 to the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds on Monday afternoon. Brett Findlay led the Soo with two goals and two assists in the win.
It was a quiet first period Franky Palazzese made his home debut in the net for the Rangers, and stopped all ten shots he faced in a scoreless opening period.
Matt Murray got the nod for Sault Ste. Marie after a day off on Sunday, and stopped five shots in the first period.
Kitchener broke up the deadlock early in the second period. Rookie Brent Pedersen scored his third of the season less than a minute and a half into the frame. Assisting on the goal were Max Iafrate and Brandon Francisco.
Sault Ste. Marie would even it at 1-1 after being awarded a penalty shot at 7:44. Nick Cousins swept the puck around Palazzese to his glove side and into the net, for his third of the year.
The Greyhounds took the lead with less than eight minutes to play in the second period. Brett Findlay scored his second of the season on a shot through traffic in front of the net. Andrew Fritsch and Gianluca Curcuruto were credited with assists on the play.
The Soo continued to press, adding another goal with 12 seconds left to play in the second. With Tobias Rieder in the Rangers' penalty box for hooking, Cousins unleashed a shot from the high slot to make it 3-1 Greyhounds. The assistant captain has nine points in eight games this season. Assisting on the power play goal were Colin Miller and Joe Rogalski.
The second period ended with a large scrum that resulted in several fights. Four Greyhounds players were assessed a total of 33 minutes of penalties, while five Rangers, including Palazzese, were penalized for a total of 42 minutes.
The Rangers came out firing in the second, out-shooting the Greyhounds 7-1 in first five minutes of the period. Sault Ste. Marie would find their sticks later in the frame, however, and finished the period with a 17-15 advantage in shots on goal.
Tobias Rieder continued his strong weekend, scoring on a penalty shot 3:19 into the third period and bringing Kitchener within one. The German forward scored a hat trick on Friday, and leads the team with five goals this season.
The Greyhounds re-established their two-goal advantage just over a minute later. Brett Findlay fired a shot five hole that beat John Gibson, who started the third in relief of Palazzese. Michael Schumacher was credited with an assist on the play.
The Soo would get to Gibson again at 10:15 in the third. New Greyhound Fritsch's scored on a cross-ice pass from Schumacher. Findlay also picked up an assist on Fritsch's fourth goal of the year.
Kitchener appeared to close the gap when Curtis Meighan found the back of the net with under ten to play, however, the goal was waved off when referees determined that the puck went in after the whistle.
The Findlay-Schumacher-Fritsch line was a successful combination for Sault Ste. Marie. After Iafrate was sent to the Kitchener penalty box, Schumacher would add a power play goal, assisted by Fritsch and Findlay making the score 6-2 with just over seven to play. Findlay's four point afternoon made him the new Greyhounds scoring leader with 11 points this season.
Gibson stopped six of the nine shots he faced in the third period. The Greyhounds finished the game with a 38-36 advantage in shots on goal.
