Oshawa Generals News Release

Oshawa, ON - October 10th, 2011 - It was a memorable Thanksgiving Day Monday at the General Motors Centre. Oshawa pulled the game out of the fire beating the Kingston Frontenacs 4-3 in a thrilling overtime for their first home victory of the season. JP Labardo scored the overtime winner, his second of the afternoon, in front of a crowd of 3,043 ecstatic fans in Oshawa.

Dan Altshuller was back in goal for Oshawa after starting the first five games of the season.

Kingston countered with Igor Bobcov. The Kingston netminder was tested right away by a streaking Nicklas Jensen who fired a snap shot, drove to the net and forced Bobcov to scramble for the rebound. Jensen was a thorn in Bobcov's side all period almost catching the goalie out of his net on a Generals penalty kill.

Kingston struck first on the power play when Fronts' defenseman, Michael Moffat, side stepped a pressing penalty killer at the point before wiring a wrist shot just inside the right post.

Down 1-0, the Generals almost evened the score with Cole Cassels springing the red hot Christian Thomas free, Oshawa's player of the week had Bobcov fooled, but the puck traced the goal line and did everything but go in the net.

In the second, the home crowd seemed pensive just waiting for a reason to explode. Captain Boone Jenner gave it to them on the penalty kill beating two Fronts' on the boards before taking the puck end to end and pounding it through Bobcov.

Tied at one, Dan Altshuller was outstanding stopping Kingston's defenseman Warren Steele who was in all alone. Oshawa's defence was solid all period and rookie Chris Carlisle did an excellent job of boxing out Jean Dupoy letting Altshuller play the shot.

Jenner thought he gave the Generals the lead from in tight in the dying seconds of the period, but his quick shot fired just over the goal.

The building heaved a huge, dissatisfied sigh on a goal from Tyler Brown who picked up a loose puck at the top of the crease and slipped it past Altshuller to start the third.

Quick to respond, the Generals power play rallied back, JP Labardo burying a rebound after a Daniel Maggio blast found its way through from the point.

Kingston centre Darcy Greenaway put the Fronts' back on top walking out from the sideboards and backhanding a wrister by Altshuller at 12:29.

But the Generals remained calm and collected and showed nerves of steel with only 40 seconds left on the clock. With the goalie pulled, Captain Boone Jenner carried the puck into enemy territory on the power play. Defenseman Daniel Maggio kept the puck alive at the blue line and partner, Nick Quinn, corked a blast from the point. Bobcov made the initial stop, but Nicklas Jensen was camped out in the slot, firing the puck in to tie the game up at three with seconds remaining.

Oshawa's offensive explosion carried into the overtime frame when just 48 seconds in, Labardo scored his second of the afternoon deflecting a wicked point shot from Colin Suellentrop lifting the home fans out of their seats and sending the crowd home happy.

Oshawa outshot Kingston 40-27 on the afternoon.

Oshawa is at Mississauga at Friday taking on the St Mike's Majors at 7:30 PM. The game can be seen live on Rogers TV Durham.

The Generals will play a pair of key divisional home games next weekend. First on Saturday when the Generals host the Ottawa 67's at 7:05pm before facing their biggest rivals the Peterborough Petes in their first matchup of the season at 6:05pm on Sunday.
