Majors off to 7-0 Start

October 10, 2011 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Mississauga St. Michael's Majors News Release

Make it seven straight victories for the now officially streaking Mississauga St. Michael's Majors.

Sergey Kuptsov scored two goals for the second straight game and added an assist as the Majors improved to a perfect 7-0 to start the season with an impressive 6-1 thumping of the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds Friday night at the Hershey Centre.

Derek Schoenmakers and Junior Harris both added a goal and an assist and rookies Scott Teskey and Doug Harvey both scored their first OHL goals as the Majors won for the second time in as many nights as they continued their torrid start to the season.

JP Anderson made 35 saves in goal and Mississauga held the Greyhounds without a power play goal in their 10 chances, as they continue to be the talk of the season in the early going.

"We're certainly enjoying the streak that's for sure," General Manager/Coach James Boyd said. "We know it's a long season and it's not going to be easy, but to get a lot of victories early will really help us by the end of the season.

"I thought we were back on our heels in the first period, but JP single handedly kept us in the game, and we generated a lot of energy after scoring the goals. I thought we played excellent hockey in the last two periods."

The Greyhounds opened the scoring on a goal by Michael Schumaker at 12:10 for the only goal of the opening period, as the Hounds out-shot the Majors 15-12 in the opening 20 minutes.

From then on it was all Majors, as Mississauga scored three goals in the second period and another three in the third to pull away. Riley Brace added a pair of assists to the Majors attack, giving him 14 points in the first seven games this season.

"Our top line certainly was opportunistic and they really made some great plays on the goals they are scoring," Boyd said of the Kuptsov/Schoenmakers/Brace combination. "It was also great to see two guys score their first goals, as we're getting contributions from everybody.

"Good defence and goaltending remains the backbone of this team, and I like the way we're playing in a lot of areas. It's been a great start to the season."

Majors were 2-for-9 on the power play while the Hounds failed to score in their 10 chances. Greyhounds out-shot the Majors 36-34 overall.

Matt Murray made 28 saves in goal for the Hounds, who lost for just the second time in six games this season.

Majors are in Brampton on Thanksgiving Monday to face the Battalion at 2:05 p.m., and play in Erie against the Otters on Wednesday night. Next home game is Friday, October 14 when the Oshawa Generals pay a visit to the Hershey Centre for a 7:35 p.m. start.
