Kitchener Rangers News Release
Two goals from Jason Shaw led the Saginaw Spirit to a 6-3 win over the Kitchener Rangers on Friday night. Eric Ming, Matt Puempel and Josh Sterk scored for the Rangers in the loss.
The Rangers hit the scoreboard first, when Owen Stewart jumped on a loose puck in Rangers territory and moved it ahead to Domenic Alberga. The overage forward found Eric Ming to the left of the Saginaw net and he bounced a shot past Jake Paterson for his 10th goal of the season.
Kitchener out-shot the Spirit 10-7 through the opening 20 minutes.
The Spirit evened the score early in the second period, when Jason Shaw's long shot from inside his own blueline snuck under Kitchener goaltender Joel Vienneau. The unassisted, short-handed marker was the overage rearguard's second of the season.
Less than two minutes later, the Spirit jumped to a 2-1 lead. Rookie Devin Sadowy tipped Brandon Prophet's point shot past Vienneau for his second goal of the year. Veteran winger Gregg Sutch also assisted on the goal at 4:18.
Sadowy's goal prompted the Rangers to make a goaltending change. Jack Moylan came to the crease in relief of Vienneau after the overage goalie allowed two goals on nine shots.
Saginaw extended its lead to two goals just past the eight minute mark when Nathan Glass fired a shot from the blueline that soared over the glove hand of Moylan. The defenceman's first career Ontario Hockey League goal was assisted by Sutch.
Justin Kea added to the Spirit's advantage just past the midway point, firing a puck past Moylan for his 21st of the year. Nick Moutrey set up the tally, while Sutch collected his third point of the night with the second assist on the play.
The Rangers led shots on goal 15-7 in the middle frame.
Shaw's second of the game extended the Spirit's lead to 5-1 three minutes into the third period. Eric Locke found the defencemen with a cross-ice pass and he beat Moylan blocker-side. Dalton Young was also credited with a helper on Shaw's third of the season.
Less than a minute later, Kitchener responded with two quick goals, cutting their deficit to two. Frank Corrado's shot on goal was turned aside by Paterson, but Josh Sterk was at the net and lunged for the rebound, pushing it over the line for his sixth of the year. Evan McEneny collected his 28th point of the season with an assist on the play.
Just 24 seconds later, the Rangers struck again. Matt Puempel snapped a shot through the five-hole of Paterson, netting his team-leading 28th of the season. Draft-eligible forward Justin Bailey's assist extended his recent point streak to three games. The second helper was credited to blueliner Max Iafrate.
Saginaw re-established a three-goal cushion just before the seven minute mark, jumping out to a 6-3 lead. Terry Trafford's sharp angle shot bounced off the goal post and behind Moylan for his eighth, with assists from Kea and Jeremiah Addison.
The Rangers out-shot the Spirit 23-11 in the final period and 48-25 overall, but Paterson stood strong, making 45 saves to secure the win for Saginaw.
