Rancho Goes Deep Twice in 3-1 Win to Even Series
June 29, 2016 - California League (CalL1)
Visalia Rawhide News Release
VISALIA, CA - The Rancho Cucamonga Quakes (45-31, 3-3) used the long ball to defeat the Visalia Rawhide (48-28, 2-4) 3-1 at Recreation Ballpark on Tuesday night to even the three-game series at a win apiece, setting up the rubber match tomorrow night.
Courtesy of 1B Marty Herum, Visalia jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Herum drove in LF Chuck Taylor, who walked before a SS Dominga Leyba double moved him to third. It was Herum's 22nd RBI of the season since joining the Rawhide on May 10th.
Rancho answered with a two-run home run in the top of the third off RHP Joel Payamps (2-1, 2.79) that gave the Quakes a lead they would not relinquish. DH Michael Ahmed singled before the C Garrett Kennedy long ball.
Rancho used a solo home run in the top of the fourth off Payamps to extend their lead to 3-1 when 3B Edwin Rios left the building for his fourth home run of the season.
That was the eventual final as the Rawhide could get nothing going offensively against RHP Andrew Sopko (8-1, 3.25), who threw six innings and allowed one run (earned) on four hits, one walk and seven strikeouts to earn the win for Rancho.
The combination of Payamps, RHP Nick Baker and RHP Camerann Gann retired the final 13 Quakes in a row to end the ballgame but the offense fell just a bit short, stranding two in the eighth and hitting into a bad luck double play in the ninth to fall 3-1. RHP Kevin Brown for Rancho threw two scoreless frames and LHP Jeff Malm (SV: 2) pitched a scoreless ninth to earn his second save of the season.
Payamps pitched well again, going six innings and notching another quality start despite taking the loss. He allowed three runs (earned) on eight hits, he did not allow a walk and struck out seven, taking his first loss in the California League.
The Rawhide continue the series tomorrow night against the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes with another 7:00 p.m. first pitch. LHP Josh Taylor (2-7, 5.47) will pitch for Visalia against RHP Tommy Berjgans (2-8, 5.21) for Rancho.
