San Jose Giants News Release
SAN JOSE, CA - The Bakersfield Blaze used a three-run top of the second and dominant pitching to earn a 3-2 victory over the San Jose Giants on Tuesday evening at Municipal Stadium. San Jose (41-34) was held to just three hits in the loss as the clubs have now split the first two games of the series.
Blaze starting pitcher Anthony Misiewicz (4-6) picked-up the win after a stellar six-inning start. The left-hander surrendered just one run and two hits during his outing with two walks issued and two strikeouts.
All three of Bakersfield's runs in the contest came in the top of the second. Facing Giants starter Jose Reyes, Jay Baum started the frame with a single before Gianfranco Wawoe drew a walk. Reyes recovered to set down the next two batters on a strikeout and a shallow fly out, but Gus Craig followed with a line drive double into the left center field gap. The hit scored both Baum and Wawoe with the first two runs of the night. Arby Fields then grounded a single into left plating Craig for a 3-0 Blaze advantage.
Reyes (2-2) was charged with the loss after yielding three runs (all earned) on five hits over a season-high tying five innings. Reyes, who was making only his third start of the year, walked two and struck out two. He finished his start with back-to-back hitless innings.
Meanwhile, Misiewicz surrendered just one hit over five scoreless innings to begin his outing. San Jose's only hit over the opening five frames was an infield single from C.J Hinojsoa with two outs in the bottom of the fourth. Misiewicz retired 15 out of the first 18 hitters that he faced.
The Giants finally broke through against Misiewicz with a run in the bottom of the sixth. A walk to Ronnie Jebavy began the inning. Steven Duggar's groundout then advanced Jebavy to second before Hinojosa flied out to left. Chris Shaw was up next and he lined a single into center plating Jebavy to cut the Bakersfield lead to 3-1. The RBI was Shaw's team-leading 54th of the season.
San Francisco Giants pitcher Sergio Romo fired two perfect innings of relief over the sixth and seventh in the continuation of his rehabilitation assignment. Romo, who threw only 24 pitches during his two frames, struck out two.
After Jeff Soptic (2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 SO) worked a 1-2-3 top of the eighth, San Jose rallied in the bottom of the inning. Facing Blaze reliever Jake Zokan, Cristian Paulino struck out to start the inning, but reached base safely when the pitch bounced away from catcher Tyler Marlette. Jebavy followed with a sharp ground ball single into right moving Paulino to second. Paulino then stole third before Duggar struck out for the first out of the inning. Then with Hinojosa batting, the Giants successfully executed a double steal to score a run. Jebavy stole second and when the throw from Marlette sailed towards second, Paulino broke for the plate and easily come home. The double steal brought San Jose to within 3-2 with the potential tying run, Jebavy, standing at second. The Giants though were unable to bring him home as Zokan induced Hinojosa to groundout before Shaw struck out in an eight-pitch at-bat.
Soptic breezed through a perfect top of the ninth, but the Giants were unable to mount a comeback in the bottom of the inning as Thyago Vieira retired Jonah Arenado and Jose Vizcaino, Jr. on back-to-back fly outs before Daniel Carbonell grounded out to end the game.
Vieira notched his first save of the season.
