San Jose Giants News Release
San Jose, CA - The San Jose Giants, alongside Franklin McKinley School District and the Shortino Family Foundation, are proud to announce the San Jose Giants Summer Reading Program. The program began on Thursday, June 16, 2016 as members of the Giants organization as well as San Jose Giants players visited four schools in order to introduce the program to the students involved. Then earlier today, the organization hosted an "Education Day" for the district at Municipal Stadium where students participated in a mock-press conference with San Jose Giants players and the Associated Press 2015 Reporter of the Year, from NBC Bay Area, Robert Handa. Students had the unique opportunity to go on the field and partake in a question and answer session with the players, drawing parallels with hard work both on the diamond and the classroom.
"The Shortino Family Foundation is very passionate about activities for children during the summer that continue to enrich their lives outside the months of school," said Elaine Curran of the Shortino Family Foundation. "Many of these students have never been to a ballgame before, and to see them out here today learning what it's like behind the scenes for these hardworking aspiring Major Leaguers was an experience that inspired all of the students."
The San Jose Giants Reading Program is baseball-centric in that each reading goal will represent a different base. For each base achieved, the San Jose Giants will offer a unique prize or game experience to recognize the achievement of each individual student. The student with the most amount of hours read will be named the "MVP" and have the opportunity to throw out the Ceremonial First Pitch at the San Jose Giants Reading Program game on Friday, July 8, 2016.
"The San Jose Giants are proud of the relationships we have built in local schools and classrooms over the years," said Juliana Paoli, Senior VP of Communications and Chief Marketing Officer. "We now have an official reading program based on a school curriculum with built-in incentives. We are so excited to debut this program alongside Franklin McKinley School District and the Shortino Family Foundation, and we look forward to continuing this great program for our youth in the future."
The four schools within the Franklin-McKinley School District that will be taking part in the program total over 500 students from Santee Elementary School, McKinley Elementary School, Los Arboles School and Dahl Elementary.
"Franklin McKinley School District is thrilled about the opportunity to work with the Shortino Family Foundation and the San Jose Giants to bring a fun, baseball oriented Summer Reading Program to our students," said Karen Allard, Franklin McKinley School District Director of Curriculum and Instruction. "The ability to teach valuable literacy lessons through the lens of baseball is a unique and exciting summer experience."
San Jose's homestand concludes today on Wednesday, June 29. The team will embark on a quick four game road trip against the Visalia Rawhide, before returning home for a special Independence Day homestand beginning Monday, July 4. The seven-game homestand will feature exciting promotions including a Stars and Stripes Jersey Auction on Monday, July 4 and Tuesday, July 5, as well as First Responders' Night on Friday, July 8. Throughout the season, San Jose Giants tickets can be purchased online at sjgiants.com, at the Municipal Stadium box office, or by calling 408.297.1435.
