Pitching Dominates as Blaze Prevail

June 29, 2016 - California League (CalL1)
Bakersfield Blaze News Release

A day after being limited to one hit, the Bakersfield Blaze (41-35) were looking for a little bit of redemption in San Jose.

The offense came and then went, but the Blaze held on to beat the Giants (41-34) 3-2.

Bakersfield jumped all over starting pitcher Jose Reyes (L, 2-2) in the second inning by scoring all three runs with two outs in the frame.

Gus Craig drove a fastball into the left-center field gap to score Jay Baum and Gianfranco Wawoe before Arby Fields slapped a ball through the left side of the infield to score Craig.

After the Blaze recorded two more hits in the fourth inning, the offense fell flat. The San Jose pitching staff of Reyes, Sergio Romo, and Jeff Soptic retired 16 consecutive batters to give the offense a chance at a comeback that never did materialize.

The Giants were able to claw one run across home plate against Anthony Misiewicz (W, 4-6), but that was all the southpaw was willing to surrender. On the night, Misiewicz only gave up a pair of hits as he also walked and struck out two batters.

Thyago Vieira (S, 1) pitched a perfect ninth inning as Bakersfield ran their road record to a remarkable 24-12 this year and the Giants fell to 0-30 when trailing after seven innings.

San Jose has won the only home game in this series up to this point, but the Blaze have won 5 of the 9 contests so far.

Game 3 is the finale on Wednesday afternoon from San Jose Municipal Stadium.

David Gascon will have the call on TuneIn Radio and BakersfieldBlaze.com starting at 12:30pm.
