The Cedar Rapids Kernels have announced that infielder Jason Ramos has been given his unconditional release by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.
Ramos, the son of Angels roving catching instructor and former major leaguer Bobby Ramos, was signed by the organization in spring training after he was released by the Boston Red Sox. In 26 games with the Kernels the Miami, FL, native hit .165 in 85 at bats with one home run, six RBI, and five runs scored.
At the time of his release Ramos was openly disscussing the possibility of returning to school and working toward getting his degree. The switch-hitting utility man attended St. Petersburg (FL) Junior College before being taken in the 26th round of the 2003 draft by Boston.
A fantastic ambassador to the Cedar Rapids community and a well-liked presence in the clubhouse, Ramos ends his baseball career having appeared in 136 games over three years. His lifetime statistics include a .175 batting average, one home run, 34 RBI, 41 runs scored, and 11 stolen bases.
No replacement has been immediately assigned to the Kernels, leaving the team's roster at 24 as they close out a four-game series at Southwest Michigan tonight.
