Wisconsin Timber Rattlers News Release
FOX CITIES STADIUM -- The biggest attendance for a Wisconsin Timber Rattler game at Fox Cities Stadium this season saw Brent Johnson and Chris Colton both homer in a 7-3 win over the Cedar Rapids Kernels on Saturday night. Colton went 3-for-4 with four RBI and Johnson was also 3-for-4. Cibney Bello in a spot start went six innings and picked up the win in front of 6,311.
Cedar Rapids (49-64 overall, 19-24 second half) grabbed the early lead with an RBI single in the top of the first inning by Freddy Sandoval. The Kernels loaded the bases with one out, but Bello got out of the jam by getting Josh LeBlanc to hit into an inning ending 4-6-3 double play.
Wisconsin (63-50, 24-19) took the lead two batters into the bottom of the first. Johnson reached on a bad hop single. Colton followed with his seventh home run, a line shot off the scoreboard in leftcenter, for a 2-1 lead.
Johnson and Colton teamed up to add to the Rattler lead in the bottom of the fifth. Johnson doubled with one out. Colton tripled off the centerfield wall to drive in Johnson. Yung Chi Chen knocked in Colton with a sacrifice fly and the Rattlers led 4-1.
An infield grounder by Oswaldo Navarro drove in a run in the bottom of the sixth inning to give the Rattlers a 5-1 lead.
Bello got into trouble in the top of the seventh. He gave up a leadoff double to Drew Toussaint. LeBlanc followed with an RBI double. That was it for Bello. He left with three walks and two strikeouts. Reliever Steve Grasley came into the game. Later in the inning, with Sean Rodriguez at first and LeBlanc at third, the Kernels attempted a double steal. Rattler catcher Jeff Clement threw to second and caught Rodriguez for the second out, but LeBlanc scored and the Kernels pulled to within 5-3.
Johnson hit the first pitch of the bottom of the seventh inning over the centerfield wall for his first home run of the season and a 6-3 Rattler lead. An RBI single by Colton in the bottom of the eighth inning provided the Rattlers with a 7-3 advantage heading to the ninth.
Jason Snyder worked a 1-2-3 top of the ninth to close out the Kernels.
Game two of the series is Sunday afternoon. Julio Santiago (3-2, 5.31ERA) is the scheduled starter for the Timber Rattlers. Fernando Rodriguez (6-7, 4.41ERA) is scheduled to go for the Kernels. Game time is 1:05pm.
