Lansing Lugnuts News Release
SOUTH BEND - Kellen Raab allowed six hits and struck out eight as he threw a complete game and Augie Murillo and Carlos Gonzales each hit a two-run homer as the South Bend Silver Hawks(66-47, 25-18) used Raab's stellar start to defeat the Lugnuts(56-56, 19-24) by a 5-1 score on Saturday night at Coveleski Stadium.
The defeat snaps Lansing's two-game winning streak and dropped them five games behind Southwest Michigan in the race for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Division in the second half after the Devil Rays knocked off Fort Wayne.
Raab and Lugnuts starter A.J. Wideman(6-8) navigated a scoreless game until the bottom of the second inning when Wilkin Castillo led off with a single and Murillo followed with his 13th homer of the year to put South Bend up 2-0.
In the third, it was Gonzales' turn. With one out, Wideman hit Billy Locklin and then allowed Gonzales' 15th homer of the season to turn the defecit into 4-0.
Lansing managed just two hits through the first five innings off Raab(5-4), but looked like they were on the comeback trail in the sixth when they got three straight hits from Eugenio Velez, Jason Armstrong and Aaron Mathews to load the bases with no outs. However, Raab recovered to strike out Eric Nielsen and then induced a double play grounder off the bat of David Hicks to squash the Lansing threat.
South Bend added its final run in the seventh when Cesar Nicolas was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to bring in Alberto Gonzalez, making it 5-0.
The Lugnuts got their lone run in the eighth off Raab when Velez started the frame with a triple and he scored on Mathews' one-out groundout.
Wideman worked six innings, allowing six hits and four runs, all of which scored on the homers by Murillo and Gonzalez.
Velez and Armstrong each collected two hits for the Lugnuts in a losing effort, with Velez extending his hitting streak to nine games. Four Silver Hawks, including Murillo, collected multi-hit games.
The Lugnuts will look to bounce back tomorrow afternoon at 2:30 p.m. as they send right hander Po-Hsuan Keng to the hill. South Bend will counter with right hander Chris Kinsey.
