BATTLE CREEK, MICH. -- The Southwest Michigan Devil Rays knocked off the first half wild card winner Fort Wayne Wizards by a 4-2 score on Saturday night before 3,399 fans at C.O. Brown Stadium.
Craig Markel's two-run double sparked a three-run second inning and the Devil Rays never looked back after the 3-0 lead. James Houser surrendered a two-run home run to Fort Wayne DH Drew Davidson to close the gap, but the Devil Rays scored another run on a Fernando Frias sacrifice fly.
Richard De Los Santos threw 3 1/3 scoreless innings of relief for his first save of the season. He allowed two hits and two walks with four strikeouts to end the game. On the season, De Los Santos has surrendered one run and seven hits in 23 2/3 innings since joining the team on July 9.
The crowd of 3,399 was the sixth largest crowd of the season for the Devil Rays at C.O. Brown Stadium.
Southwest Michigan will play the second game of the four game series against the Wizards on Sunday, August 7 at 2:05 p.m. RHP Eddie De La Cruz will start for the Devil Rays against LHP Cesar Ramos for the Wizards. It's McCullough Family Chiropractic Family Sunday where kids can run the bases after the game and enjoy the mascot "Crickey" from the Discovery Channel during the day.
