Carolina Mudcats News Release
Birmingham, AL --- The Carolina Mudcats lost a 3-1 lead with two outs in the bottom of the ninth in Birmingham, then saw massive rains halt play in the top of the 11th and the game was not resumed as the Mudcats and Barons played all night to no official outcome at Regions Park.
Friday night's game was the final meeting of the first half between the teams and will not be suspended or made up. At press time, officials informed the clubs that the stats from the game will count, but the game will not be reported in the first half standings. Carolina hosts Birmingham August 12-16 at Five County, midway through the second half.
Carolina scored three times in the third inning to give James Avery a 3-0 lead thanks to an RBI-double by Sean Henry and a check-swing, two-run single from Logan Parker.
Avery worked seven strong innings, allowing five hits and only a fourth inning run.
Leading 3-1 into the bottom of the ninth, Derrik Lutz continued pitching off of a perfect eighth inning, retiring the first hitter before walking Stefan Gartrell. After John Shelby lined to third for the second out, CJ Retherford doubled high off of the left field wall to score Gartrell, making it a 3-2 game. Lutz was relieved by lefty Camilo Vazquez to pitch against the left-handed Jordan Danks, who on a 3-2 pitch, looped a game tying single into short left-center. Sean Watson then came in to walk Rob Hudson, but retired Tyler Flowers to end the inning.
A strong cell moved closer to Birmingham as the game moved into extra innings, but play continued through stiff rain until the top of the 11th inning when the rain intensified after a walk to Parker. The Barons were taken off of the field and the tarp unrolled, but the weight of the heavy rains didn't allow the field to be completely covered, with all of the home plate area and the first base line immediately soaked by the driving rain. The tarp crew gave up on covering the field even after nine Barons players joined in to try to pull the tarp into place.
Carolina returns home Saturday night to host the Jacksonville Suns at 6:15 PM ET. Misael DeJesus (1-4, 10.36) starts against Cristhian Martinez (4-2, 1.67) opposes for the Suns.
