Montgomery Biscuits News Release
MOBILE, AL - The Biscuits (18-17) recorded a season-high 13 runs to dust the Mobile BayBears (19-16), 13-3, completing a five-game sweep at Hank Aaron Stadium on Friday night. The sweep is the first five-game sweep in the all-time series between the two clubs. The win also pulls the Biscuits over the .500 mark for the first time this season.
The Biscuits got out quickly against BayBears starter Cody Evans. For the 15th consecutive game on the road, the Biscuits scored first, plating four runs in the first inning. Brandon Chaves started the most prolific first inning of the season for Montgomery when he walked with one out. With two outs, Jason Perry singled to put runners on the corners. Rashad Eldridge then rolled a soft-grounder to second base that scored a run when Greg Bordes couldn't play it cleanly. The Biscuits capitalized on the opportunity as J.T. Hall followed with a two-run double to left field and Cesar Suarez made it 4-0 with a double to score Hall.
Montgomery got after Evans again in the second inning. Drew Anderson was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and two batters later Rhyne Hughes singled to put two aboard. Perry then crushed an Evans offering for a three-run home run to right field to put the Biscuits in front 7-0.
Mobile didn't lay down, and chased Biscuits' starter Ryan Morse in the bottom of the inning. Pete Clifford started the threat with a one-out single which was followed quickly by a single from Mark Hallberg. Morse walked Greg Bordes to load the bases before Evan Frey cracked a two-run double to put the BayBears on the board at 7-2. Morse walked both Chris Rahl and James Skelton to force a run home and was removed from the ballgame. Brian Baker was called upon in relief and escaped the jam without further damage done.
Montgomery exploded for six runs in the fourth inning, their largest output in a single inning this season. Anderson singled to lead off the inning, and Desmond Jennings followed a two-run blast to left-center field. Chaves then reached on an error and advanced to third on a double for Hughes. Eldridge contributed an RBI single, Hall an RBI triple and Matt Spring capped the inning with an RBI single to put the Biscuits ahead 10 runs, 13-3.
Evans (2-4) was charged with 12 runs - seven earned - over 3 1/3 innings and took the loss for Mobile. Baker (1-0) earned the win - his first decision of the season - after turning in 4 2/3 innings of scoreless relief. Baker was sensational, striking out seven, a season-high for a Biscuits' reliever.
Mike Wlodarczyk took it the rest of the way, firing three scoreless innings of relief for his first save of the season. All told, the Biscuits bullpen turned in 7 2/3 innings of scoreless relief in the victory.
The Biscuits return to Riverwalk Stadium on Saturday night to open a five-game series against the Mississippi Braves at 7:05 PM. LHP Brandon Mann (2-0, 5.30) will make the start for Montgomery against RHP Kyle Cofield (1-1, 3.56) for the M-Braves.
