Tacoma Rainiers News Release
TACOMA, Wash. -- The Tacoma Rainiers came up short in a 4-3 series-opening loss to the Tucson Padres at Cheney Stadium on Tuesday, stretching the club's losing skid to seven games.
The Rainiers led 2-1 before surrendering what proved to be an overwhelming three runs to the Padres in the top of the fourth inning. Designated hitter Vince Belnome tied the score with a sacrifice fly that drove in Matt Clark. Outfielder Anthony Contreras added another with an RBI-double, then scored a run on a Carlos Triunfel fielding error.
Tacoma took a brief 2-1 lead over the Padres in the bottom of the third. Trailing 1-0, infielder Nick Franklin drove in a pair of runs with a single to put the Rainiers up by one until Tucson countered with a three-run frame in the fourth.
As a team, Tacoma combined to collect five hits in the contest. Outfielder Darren Ford delivered the only one that went for extra bases; doubling in the fifth to score Vinnie Catricala and bring the Rainiers within a run.
The Tacoma pitching staff combined to strike out 15 batters in the opener - the most Tacoma has recorded in a 9.0 inning game this season. Starter Hector Noesi (0-2) was responsible for nine of those strikeouts, but was dealt a loss after allowing four runs - three earned - on four hits over 5.1 innings.
Relievers Brian Moran (2.2) and Chance Ruffin (1.0) combined to toss 3.2 perfect innings out of the bullpen, with the left-hander Moran striking out six Tucson batters.
The Rainiers (41-62) play the second leg of the club's four-game series against the Padres (39-63) at 11:35 a.m. tomorrow, July 24. Right-hander Erasmo Ramirez (3-2, 3.11) is scheduled to make an MLB rehab start with Tacoma in the contest against right-hander Matt Palmer (6-6, 6.16) for Tucson.
