Tacoma Rainiers News Release
TACOMA, Wash. - The Tacoma Rainiers rolled to a sixth consecutive win after topping the Tucson Padres 4-1 in the series opener between the two clubs at Cheney Stadium on Monday night.
Tacoma jumped ahead for good after taking an early 1-0 lead in the top of the second. Catcher Mike Zunino led off with a triple - his first career hit at Cheney Stadium - then scored after outfielder Stefen Romero grounded out one at-bat later.
The Rainiers edge over the Padres grew to two in the sixth thanks to a solo home run hit by Alex Liddi to start the inning. The third baseman now leads the team with six homers and is tied with Zunino for tops on the club with 26 RBI this season.
Tacoma combined to collect seven hits in the contest, with Liddi and outfielder Eric Thames each turning in 2-for-4 efforts. Thames is riding a team-leading 13-game hitting streak, and he is the only player in the league to reach base safely in each of his team's first 25 games this season. Infielder Nick Franklin stretched his hitting streak to 10 games after going one for three in the series opener.
Starter Brian Sweeney (3-0) picked up his second consecutive win after holding Tucson to two hits and striking out three over 6.0 scoreless innings. Left-hander Lucas Luetge tossed a scoreless frame in the ninth and picked up his first save this season.
The Rainiers (15-10) look to stretch the team's winning streak to seven in the second game of their four-game set against Tucson tomorrow, April 30. Tacoma's not-yet-announced starting pitcher will face off against right-hander Keyvious Sampson (0-1, 8.83) for the Padres. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
