ROUND ROCK, Texas - Nick Franklin and Andrew Carraway of the Tacoma Rainiers have been named Pacific Coast League Player and Pitcher of the Week for the week of April 22nd-28th, the league office announced today.
Franklin and Carraway each had outstanding weeks contributing to a Tacoma Rainiers (14-10) five-game winning streak that has catapulted them into first place in the Pacific Northern Division.
Franklin hit .474 over five games increasing his season average to .382, good for eighth in the league. The second baseman added six RBI on nine hits including three doubles and a home run. Franklin also walked seven times, stole a base and had an impressive line of .600/.789/1.389.
The Sanford, FL native was drafted out of Lake Brantley High School by the Seattle Mariners in the 1st round (27th) of the 2009 First-Year Player Draft. Franklin was ranked No. 79 among the Top 100 Prospects by Baseball America heading into the 2013 season.
Carraway tossed a near perfect seven innings on Friday, April 26th in Las Vegas, limiting the 51s to only two hits and a walk while not surrendering a run. The right hander held Las Vegas to a .087 average against and recorded five strikeouts in the win.
Originally from Atlanta, GA, Carraway was drafted in the 12th round out of the University of Virginia by the Mariners in the 2009 First-Year Player Draft. In five starts this season, Carraway is 3-1 with a 3.38 ERA.
Franklin and Carraway became the first teammates to sweep the weekly awards since Michael Taylor and Daniel Straily of the Sacramento River Cats achieved the feat during the week of July 16th last season.
