May 7, 2011 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Tacoma Rainiers News Release
Tacoma, WA - The Tacoma Rainiers failed to keep pace and dropped their series opener with the Las Vegas 51s 14-3 in front of 5,966 fans at Cheney Stadium on Friday night.
Following a nearly two-hour rain delay prior to the start of the game, Tacoma watched Las Vegas pour on the offense with 14 runs on 13 hits and four home runs over the fifth through the ninth innings.
The Rainiers lost a 1-0 lead after surrendering four runs in the fifth inning, thanks in large part to a three-run home from 51s third baseman Brett Lawrie. Las Vegas put together five more runs in the seventh inning following a grand slam home run from second baseman Jonathan Diaz. Catcher Ryan Budde and designated hitter Ryan Shealy both got in on the action and delivered home runs in the sixth and eighth innings.
Dustin Ackley proved to the offensive highlight for the Rainiers on Friday night after going 2-for-5, including a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth inning that gave Tacoma an early 1-0 lead. Outfielder Mike Wilson and shortstop Sean Kazmar turned in Tacoma's other two multi-hit outings after each recorded a pair of hits.
Las Vegas starter Brett Cecil (2-1) earned the win, holding the Rainiers to one run on four hits over six innings. Tacoma starter Chaz Roe (0-3) was dealt the loss, surrendering five runs on nine hits to the 51s while walking two and fanning eight.
The Rainiers (11-18) look to bounce back with a win in the second game of their four-game series with the Las Vegas 51s scheduled for 7:05 p.m. on Saturday. Tacoma sends left-hander Fabio Castro (1-2, 6.35) to the mound in the contest with right-hander Michael McDonald (1-1, 7.13) slated to get the start for Las Vegas. The game can be heard live on South Sound Sports 850-AM and streamed online at www.tacomarainiers.com.
