Iowa Cubs News Release
A pinch-hit walk-off home run by Brad Snyder in the bottom of the 10th inning sent the Iowa Cubs (14-15) home as winners as they defeated the New Orleans Zephyrs (16-14) 1-0 Saturday night at Principal Park.
Iowa starter Robert Coello outlasted New Orleans' Adalberto Mendez, as the two were locked in a pitcher's duel and matched each other almost inning for inning, though neither would factor in the decision.
The Cubs threatened in the seventh, eighth, and ninth innings before finally getting to Zephyrs' reliever Frank Mata in the 10th. Mata (1-2) retired Welington Castillo on a broken bat groundout to the shortstop, before Snyder stepped to the plate. Then Snyder, pinch hitting for Scott Maine, sent a 3-1 pitch deep and over the left-center wall for the lone run of the game and the win.
Coello had his best outing of the season for Iowa. His eight innings pitched were the longest for an I-Cubs starter this year. He struck out seven, a season best, and walked none, another first for him this season. He only allowed four hits, and gave up no runs. Coello had a stretch of 15-straight batters retired, and recored five 1-2-3 innings against the Zephyrs. Scott Maine (2-1) was credited with the win. He pitched two innings, did not allow a hit or a walk and struck out five.
The Cubs backed Coello in the field with some fine glove work as well. Lou Montanez turned a fielding gaff into a gem, when he overran a ball off the bat of Chris Aguila, but would throw him out at third trying to stretch the double into a triple in the second inning. Jonathan Mota used some fancy footwork in the third to turn an inning ending double-play and Moore atoned for an error earlier in the game with a great diving stop to his left in the fifth. Mota ended the game 2-for-3 at the plate, the only player on either side with multiple hits.
Zephyrsâ starter, and former I-Cub, Adalberto Mendez was sharp as well. He pitched seven innings, gave up three hits, no runs and no walks, and struck out six.
The Cubs and Zephyrs play game three of the four-game series tomorrow afternoon at Principal Park. J.R. Mathes (1-2, 8.71) Iowa and Elih Villanueva (2-3, 4.68) for New Orleans are scheduled to start with first pitch at 1:05 p.m.
