Wellemeyer Retires

May 7, 2011 - Pacific Coast League (PCL) - Iowa Cubs News Release

Pitcher Todd Wellemeyer announced his retirement from baseball today, effective immediately. Wellemeyer appeared in one game for Iowa this season after signing a minor-league deal with Chicago in January.

After staying behind in extended spring training to recover from a hip injury, Wellemeyer was activated on Iowa's roster May 5. He started that day for the I-Cubs and pitched three and two-thirds innings, giving up four runs on eight hits with two walks and two strikeouts.

It was Wellemeyer's second stint with the Chicago Cubs organization. He was originally drafted by Chicago in the fourth round of the 2000 draft and had also spent parts of three seasons with Iowa from 2003-2005.
