Tacoma Rainiers News Release
TACOMA, Wash. - The Tacoma Rainiers offense collected 12 hits but struggled to keep pace in a 12-5 loss to the Las Vegas 51s at Cheney Stadium on Friday night.
Las Vegas tallied 13 hits against the Rainiers in the contest, beginning with Andrew Brown's solo home run that put the 51s on top 1-0 in the top of the second inning.
Mike Zunino notched his 43rd RBI of the season and tied the score at 1-1 with a run-scoring single in the bottom of the frame, only to have Las Vegas rifle off three more runs two innings later in the fourth. The 51s later tacked on an insurmountable five runs on four hits in the fifth inning.
Infielders Dustin Ackley and Brad Miller led the Rainiers lineup after each collected three hits on Friday. Ackley extended his hitting streak to nine games after collecting a pair of singles and a two-RBI double. He is now batting .432 over his first ten appearances with the Rainiers this season.
Miller recorded three singles and was responsible for driving in one of the Rainiers three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. He has now hit safely in each of his last eight games.
The catcher Zunino turned in his first multi-hit game at Cheney Stadium after going 2-for-4 with an RBI, and outfielder Stefen Romero chipped in another run while collecting a double and a single.
Starter James Paxton (2-5) surrendered nine runs, seven earned, on eight hits over 4.1 innings and was dealt the loss. The left-hander struck out six batters and walked four in his 12th start of the season.
Tacoma maintains a 2.5-game lead over Colorado Springs for first place in the Pacific Coast League Pacific Northern Division standings after the Sky Sox lost at Reno earlier in the night.
The Rainiers (37-25) host the third game of a four-game series with Las Vegas (32-27) at 7:05 p.m. tomorrow, June 7. Right-hander Erasmo Ramirez (0-1, 3.18) is slated to make his second start for Tacoma this season against 51s right-hander Matt Fox (1-1, 4.09).
