Tacoma Rainiers News Release
TACOMA, Wash. - The Tacoma Rainiers failed to bounce back from some early struggles and fell to the Las Vegas 51s 4-2 in front of 6,882 fans at Cheney Stadium on Friday.
The Rainiers surrendered an insurmountable four runs in the top of the first inning, including three scored off bases-loaded walks.
Starter Danny Hultzen gave up a walk and a single over the 51s first two at-bats before surrendering an RBI-single to outfielder Ricardo Nanita with one out. The left-hander walked three out of the next four batters faced, with the final two issued with the bases loaded.
Right-hander Brian Sweeney entered in relief with two outs in the inning and doled out a bases-loaded walk to the first batter he faced to account for the 51s fourth and final run of the frame.
Hultzen (1-3) was dealt the loss in his ninth start for the Rainiers this season after he was tagged for four runs on two hits over just 0.2 innings. He issued four walks and struck out one.
Outfielder Carlos Peguero was responsible for driving in both Rainiers runs on Friday night. Peguero delivered an RBI-double that plated Luis Jimenez in the fourth inning, and then scored Franklin Gutierrez with a sacrifice fly in the eighth.
The designated hitter Jimenez's 3-for-4 effort led a Rainiers lineup that combined to collect nine hits. Jimenez doubled in the fourth and sixth, then turned in a single in the eighth. Third baseman Alex Liddi recorded Tacoma's other multi-hit performance after going 2-for-4 against the 51s. Relievers Brian Sweeney (5.1), Cesar Jimenez (2.0) and Steven Hensley (1.0) combined to strike out six batters over 8.1 innings out of the bullpen. This was Jimenez's first outing with Tacoma since going on the disabled list with a sore left shoulder on June 20.
The Rainiers (57-77) host the fourth game of the five-game series with the 51s (75-58) at 7:05 p.m. tomorrow, August 25. Right-hander Erasmo Ramirez (4-3, 4.43) is scheduled to start for Tacoma in the contest against left-hander Brett Cecil (1-1, 2.43) for Las Vegas.
