Oberholtzer turns in another quality start, but offense held to one run and four hits

Des Moines, Iowa - Former RedHawk Diory Hernandez drove in three runs and the Iowa Cubs (53-82) received a strong night from their pitching staff in a 4-1 defeat of the Oklahoma City RedHawks (70-64) before 8,009 Saturday night at Principal Park.

Four Cubs pitchers combined to hold the RedHawks to just one run and four hits. Starting pitcher Ty'Relle Harris had his best start since joining the rotation at the beginning of the month, allowing one run on four hits. Harris (2-3) set a season high with six strikeouts and walked only one.

Three Iowa relievers retired nine of the final 10 RedHawks to come to the plate. Jario Asencio earned a save for a second-straight night after pitching a scoreless ninth, giving him five total with the Cubs.

Only three of the last 22 RedHawks hitters reached base.

For the first time in the series, the Cubs scored first. With a runner a third and two out, Dave Sappelt lined an 0-2 pitch to left field to make it 1-0.

Iowa added another run in the sixth on a sac fly by Hernandez.

The RedHawks broke through for their first run in the seventh. Matt Downs drew a leadoff walk and Mike Hessman followed with an RBI double, giving him his 70th RBI of the season.

Miguel Socolovich then replaced Harris and retired the next three batters to strand Hessman on base.

In the bottom of the eighth, Hernandez connected on a two-run homer above the left-center field suites for just his second home run of the season.

Hernandez, who hit .159 with two RBIs over 32 games for the RedHawks earlier this season, has hit .423 with seven RBIs against the RedHawks over nine games.

RedHawks pitcher Brett Oberholtzer turned in his fourth straight quality start, but walked away with another tough loss. Oberholtzer (5-7) allowed two runs over 6.2 innings, giving up seven hits. He struck out seven and walked two, both intentionally.

In three of his last four starts, the RedHawks have scored a total of two runs, resulting in a trio of losses for the lefty.

The RedHawks and Cubs finish their series in Des Moines at 1:05 p.m. Sunday afternoon. Live coverage begins at 12:35 p.m. on AM 1340 The Game, 1340thegame.com, or through the free IHeartRadio mobile app.
