Tonight's Game-- The RedHawks will try and clinch a series victory when they continue play against the Iowa Cubs at Prinicpal Park at 7:05 p.m.
Last Night-- The Cubs came alive at the plate late in the game, scoring three runs over the seventh and eighth innings to defeat the RedHawks, 5-3. The RedHawks struck first in the third inning with a two-out RBI single by Jimmy Paredes. Iowa took the lead in the fourth, using two errors, two walks, and a wild pitch to their advantage, scoring twice to take the lead. The RedHawks went back in front in the sixth. After a wild pitch tied the game, Jose Martinez delivered an RBI single to give the RedHawks the lead. In the seventh, former RedHawk Diory Hernandez tied the game with an RBI single, and Tony Campana smashed a two-out RBI triple off Brian Sanches (1-3). Adrian Cardenas homered in the eighth. The Cubs didn't need the insurance run, as Jairo Asencio retired the side in order in the ninth for his fourth save.
Tonight's Probable Pitchers-- Brett Oberholtzer looks to continue his recent string of success...Over his last three starts, Oberholtzer has allowed five runs and 20 hits over 21.2 IP (2.08 ERA), lasting at least seven innings each time...However, he's only 1-2 in those starts because in the two losses, the RedHawks scored a total of one run...Oberholtzer was a tough luck loser Monday in Round Rock...He allowed two runs and 10 hits over 7.2 innings, marking his longest outing with the RedHawks and tying a season high...The RedHawks fell 2-1, as Round Rock's Martin Perez pitched a complete game...It was Oberholtzer's first quality start since joining the RedHawks after he had really been struggling away from OKC...In seven road games he is 1-5 with a 7.93 ERA...Tonight will be Oberholtzer's third outing against Iowa...He is 1-0 and has allowed nine runs and 16 hits over 10.2 IP...Primarily a reliever throughout this career, Ty'Relle Harris recently moved into the Iowa rotation...In four starts, he is 1-2 with a 7.50 ERA...He had allowed just one run and two hits over 7.1 IP while in the Iowa bullpen...Harris has also spent time at High-A Daytona and Double-A Tennessee, going a combined 3-6 with a 4.03 ERA in 2012...He had made three career starts before this season since turning pro in 2009, but has made six starts in 2012...Both Harris and Oberholtzer came to their current organizations through trades with Atlanta, and they were teammates in 2009 and 2010 at Danville, Rome, and Myrtle Beach.
Hit King-- With 157 hits, Jimmy Paredes now owns the franchise record for most hits in a season and is one hit away from tying his career high. He is second in the PCL in hits (157) and stolen bases (36), while ranking third in runs scored (91). Last night also marked hit 50th multi-hit game of the season.
Shuck-Tacular-- By flying out in his only plate appearance yesterday, J.B. Shuck's five-game hitting streak ended. However, he is still batting .474 (9-for-19) over his last six games.
Power Outage-- The RedHawks have hit just 11 home runs this month, third-lowest in the PCL. They're only slugging .339 in August, tied with Memphis for lowest in the league. It's also about 100 points lower than their previous lowest slugging month (.429 in April).
Friend Turned Foe, Part I-- Former Iowa Cub Brad Snyder has hit three homers against his old squad this season. Each one has put the RedHawks in the lead in the sixth inning or later.
Friend Turned Foe, Part II-- Former RedHawk Diory Hernandez has hit .435 (10-for-23) with four RBIs over eight games against the RedHawks. He is hitting .183 with eight RBIs against the rest of the PCL.
Super Bass-- Brian Bass is having an outstanding month, posting a 1.53 ERA over five outings (17.2 IP). Since moving to the bullpen, Bass has allowed one run and nine hits over 10.2 IP, including no runs over his last 9.1 IP.
Promising Pitching-- Although the pitching staff struggled a lot following the All-Star Break, it has vastly improved of late. Over the last 15 games the team ERA is 2.80 (42 ER/135 IP). The starters have turned in nine quality starts and posted a combined 2.45 ERA (24 ER/88.0 IP) with 54 strikeouts and 22 walks.
Keeping it in the Park-- The RedHawks have allowed just five dingers over the last 13 contests, spanning 118 IP.
RISP-y Business-- Over the last 15 games, the RedHawks have limited their opponents to a .174 average with runners in scoring position (29-for-167).
Climbing Back-- The Rehawks have been playing better of late, winning seven of their last 11 games. However, they have gone 12-23 since July 19. They went from leading the division by two games to dropping to third place and falling 5.5 games back of first. They're only hitting .244 over the last 28 games (8-20).
Against the I-Cubs-- The RedHawks are 11-3 against Iowa this season, including a 4-2 mark at Principal Park...The RedHawks have hit 17 homers while averaging 5.9 runs per game...Mike Hessman has torched the I-Cubs, hitting seven homers in 13 games with 12 RBIs...J.B. Shuck has hit .409 over 12 contests and has drawn seven walks, giving him a .552 on-base percentage...The RedHawks have won seven games by two runs or less, including five by one run...Two of Iowa's three wins have been shutouts.
