Tacoma Rainiers News Release
Tacoma, WA - The Rainiers provided plenty of pop at the plate, with early home runs lifting Tacoma to an 8-2 win over the Fresno Grizzlies at Cheney Stadium on Saturday night.
It did not take long for the power to come on for the Rainiers in the outing, with first baseman Mike Carp belting a three-run home run with two outs in the bottom of the first to give Tacoma a quick 3-0 advantage.
Designated hitter Brad Nelson upped the lead to five runs after going deep with second baseman Jack Hannahan on first base in the third inning.
The Rainiers notched two more runs in the fourth, beginning with a single from outfielder Mike Wilson that drove in Matt Mangini with one out. A sacrifice fly from Nelson drove in Wilson three batters later.
Carp finished the game off like he started it and belted a solo shot to lead off the fifth inning.
The Grizzlies made their only appearances on the scoreboard in the top of the fifth inning thanks to an RBI-double from Emmanuel Burriss, followed by an RBI-triple from second baseman Eugenio Velez.
Carp proved to be the breadwinner for the Rainiers in the win after turning in his third multi-homer outing of the season and driving four runs. Velez was the headliner for Fresno, turning in a 2-for-3 performance with one RBI.
Tacoma starter Andy Baldwin picked up his sixth win of the season after holding the Grizzlies to two runs on seven hits over five innings with two walks and three strikeouts.
Right-hander Daryl Maday collected his first loss in his second start with the Grizzlies after giving up all eight Rainiers runs on nine hits over five innings.
The Rainiers take the field for the final time before the All-Star Break when they close out their series with Fresno at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday. Newly named PCL All-Star Chris Seddon will get the start for the Rainiers with left-hander Matt Yourkin set to take the mound for the Grizzlies.
