Walters Leads 'Birds to Victory

MEMPHIS, TN - Memphis wrapped up the first half of the Pacific Coast League season with a 5-1 victory over Nashville Sunday afternoon at AutoZone Park.

Redbirds starter P.J. Walters was a one-man show earning the win and driving in three runs. Walters allowed one run on seven hits over 6.2 innings on the mound and his bases loaded double in the sixth inning capped a four-run rally. Donovan Solano's RBI-single tied the game in the sixth and Kevin Howard added a solo home run in the eighth for the 'Birds. Mat Gamel paced the Sounds with two hits and Joe Koshansky's second inning solo home run represented the lone run for Nashville.

Sounds starter Chuck Lofgren took the loss allowing two runs, one earned, on six hits across 5.2 innings. Fernando Salas earned his 16th save for the Redbirds striking out five over the final two frames.

The Triple-A All-Star break begins tomorrow with the Triple-A All-Star Game on Wednesday night in Allentown, PA (Lehigh Valley). The Redbirds will be represented by pitchers Brandon Dickson and Fernando Salas as well as hitting coach Mark Budaska. The game will be broadcast on the MLB Network beginning at 6 p.m. CT. Memphis returns to action on Thursday night at New Orleans and opens up an eight-game homestand on Monday, July 19 against Omaha and Oklahoma City.
